NYC AHEPA, SOP Chapters Donate to #RebuildStNicholas Campaign Drive
An AHEPA and Sons of Pericles chapter each donated to AHEPA's capital campaign to help rebuild Saint Nicholas National Shrine at World Trade Center over the weekend.  

The Gus Cherevas Estia-Pindus Chapter 326, Flushing, N.Y. presented a $30,000 donation to Supreme President John W. Galanis, Oct. 18. Chairman of the Board Nicholas A. Karacostas, PSP, who also serves as National Chairman of the AHEPA-Saint Nicholas National Shrine Capital Campaign Drive and is a member of Chapter 326, presented the donation along with several proud chapter members.



Also Oct. 18, Sons of Pericles Chapter 293, Bayside, N.Y. presented a $1,200 donation to Supreme President Galanis and SOP Supreme President Andreas Christou for AHEPA's #RebuildStNicholas capital campaign drive.   Chapter 293 President Chris Tavantzis made the presentation.  As the only current active SOP chapter in New York City, the Junior Brothers raised the funds for a cause that truly has hit close to home.

U.S. Congressman Norcross Joins the Hellenic Caucus
U.S. Rep. Norcross
AHEPA welcomes news that U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ) has joined the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, announced Supreme President John Galanis.

"We sincerely thank Congressman Norcross for joining the Hellenic Caucus," Galanis said. "We look forward to working with him, and his staff, on issues of importance to the American Hellenic community. We also thank the dedicated grassroots of Ahepans from District Five, New Jersey, for their efforts." 

Membership in the Hellenic Caucus now stands at 131. Since mid-July, eleven U.S. representatives have joined the Hellenic Caucus.

Congressman Norcross represents New Jersey's First Congressional District, which includes Cherry Hill.  He is a member of the  House Armed Services Committee and the House Budget Committee.

Joe B iden Quotes Son Beau in Human Rights Awards Speech  ABC News (Oct. 17) Vice President Joe Biden made no explicit mention of his contemplation of a 2016 presidential campaign tonight at the Athenagoras Human Rights Awards, but he did speak about one of the things believed to be the chief sticking point to a run: grief over the death of his son, Beau, who passed away in May after a fight with brain cancer.  The vice president, who was this year's recipient of the award, the highest bestowed by the Greek Orthodox Church, shared something he said his son often said.  Read More  
 

Greece Approves First Austerity Bill  Wall Street Journal (Oct. 16) Greece's lawmakers approved Friday the first bill containing tough austerity measures and economic overhauls agreed under its new bailout program. After a week-long debate, the bill, which includes stricter pension rules, tax hikes and tougher fines for tax evasion, was passed by the majority of Greece's 300 lawmakers. Cyprus says cannot lift veto on Turkey's EU talks   Reuters (Oct. 19) Cyprus said on Monday it would not end its veto of Turkey's accession negotiations with the European Union, potentially scuppering EU leaders' plans to "re-energize" the talks in return for Ankara's help in tackling Europe's migrant crisis. The conflict-divided east Mediterranean island has a long list of grievances against Turkey, its giant northern neighbor. It has blocked the accession talks for several years citing the presence of Turkish troops in the breakaway Turkish-speaking north of the island.   Read More   


Dialogue the only path to bridging differences, PM Tsipras and Ecumenical Patriarch agree  ANA-MPA (Oct. 19) Dialogue is the only path to bridging differences, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew agreed on Monday, during their meeting at the prime minister's office at the Maximos Mansion.  The Patriarch hailed this as an opportunity to congratulate Tsipras on his re-election in person and to wish his new government every success in its difficult task.  Read More

Greek comedy wins top prize at BFI's London Film Festival
The Guardian  (Oct. 17) A deadpan Greek comedy about a contest of machismo among six men on board a yacht has won the top prize at the British Film Institute's London Film Festival Awards. The film Chevalier, directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari, is a grim and absurd comic character study of masculine prowess and anxiety. The men embark on a series of challenges with the winner to be presented with a ring, the Chevalier of the title.  Read More
 
Nazi archives shed light on WWII atrocities in Greece
AFP (Oct. 19) From the number of Cretans to be executed for every dead German soldier to advice on which brothel to use, new research is shedding light on Nazi wartime atrocities in Greece.   Greece's defence ministry on Monday unveiled its first findings from research into formerly classified Wehrmacht papers found in archives in the United States.  The senior historian working on the project spoke of an "endless list" of killing,   looting and burning of villages, drawn from local dispatches to the Wehrmacht high command and personal diaries.  Read More
