AHEPA Applauds Hellenic Caucus Letter to DHS Secretary
AHEPA applauds the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues for taking bipartisan action to urge the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to provide assistance for Greece as the latter stands at the frontline of the refugee crisis, announced Supreme President John W. Galanis.  The Caucus sent  a letter  signed by 32 U.S. representatives to DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson that calls for DHS to provide technical guidance and assistance to Greece and its border control agencies to effectively deal with the crisis.

"AHEPA commends the Hellenic Caucus for taking swift action following October's Summit on Greece to explore a substantive policy initiative that the American Hellenic community supports," Galanis said. "With the number of sea arrivals of refugees to Greece exceeding a half million, and growing each day by the thousands, time is of the essence to assist Greece.  We hope the Caucus' initiative will yield a favorable response from Homeland Security that leads to the U.S. government lending its expertise to help our valued ally, Greece. We sincerely appreciate the bipartisan backing from the legislators who signed the letter."

During the past several weeks, AHEPA conveyed its support for the letter to congressional offices.

Lesbos braces for winter as refugees keep coming  DW (Oct. 29)   On Lesbos, the numbers of refugees coming continue to rise, despite the weather. Omaira Gill reports from the Greek island where even the cemetery is overwhelmed by new arrivals from across the sea.  Agios Panteleimonas is a saint known for his miracles and his steadfast faith. These days, at the sprawling cemetery in Mytilene named after him, there are no miracles to be found.  In a corner at the back of the site are mounds of earth that lie at a different angle compared to the rest of the graves with pieces of broken marble serving as headstones...read more

Stress Tests for the Greek Prime Minister
New York Times (Nov. 1)  One stress test is over for Athens, but several more are looming. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras received good news over the weekend when a stress test showed that the top Greek banks needed to raise a lowish 14.4 billion euros, or $15.9 billion, in capital. But Mr. Tsipras has to implement more tough measures before he can get the economy growing. Until then, he faces political risks, which could yet tip Greece back into crisis...read more

Cardiac Plug Lowers Risk of Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation
HospiMedica (Oct. 28)   Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) reduces the risk of subsequent strokes in patients with previous brain hemorrhages and diagnosed atrial fibrillation (AF), according to a new study.  Researchers at AHEPA University Hospital Thessaloniki (AHEPA; Greece) reported post-aurgical results on 1,001 patients treated from December 2008 to November 2013 at 22 institutions; about 57% of the patients had permanent AF and the others had persistent or paroxysmal AF. Among the patients, 19% had experienced previous intracranial bleeding, 47% had experienced previous major bleeding episodes, and 14% had experienced gastrointestinal bleeding. A Shipwreck Graveyard Has Been Found Off This Greek Archipelago  Smithsonian  (Oct. 29) For underwater archaeologists, even a few shards of ancient pottery can count as buried treasure. But sometimes, explorers hit the artifact jackpot. A joint Greek-American expedition announced this week that they have just uncovered a whopping 22 shipwrecks around the Fourni archipelago-a find they say adds 12 percent to the total number of known ancient shipwrecks in Greece.  The newfound wrecks include cargo that dates from the Archaic Period (700 to 480 B.C.) all the way up to the 16th century, and the team says the finds could change the way historians think about ancient Greek trade. For instance, some of the amphorae styles found around the wrecks have never been seen before on the seafloor...read more

Greek and Turkish Cypriots unite in defence of halloumi  Telegraph (Oct. 31) Cyprus's drive to secure protected status from the European Union for its national cheese has placed the British government in a diplomatic pickle.  London felt obliged last week to support British halloumi producers, who object to a Cypriot application that would, if successful, prevent them from selling their cheese under that famous name.  Picking up the gauntlet, Euripides Evriviades, Cyprus's High Commissioner in London, vowed: "We will fight to the bitter end to secure our halloumi hellim, a truly Cyprus product." Hellim is the Turkish Cypriot name for the national cheese...read more
