AHEPA Provides Meals to Those in Need following Irma; Disaster Relief Fund Opened in Wake of Hurricanes
On the Monday following Hurricane Irma's path through Florida, AHEPA George Washington Chapter 16, Tarpon Springs, Fla., opened its chapter home to serve 100 meals to persons without electricity. During that week, the chapter fed more than 350 persons, some who were homeless, in partnership with a local food bank. Also, the Sons of Pericles from Tallahassee, Fla., arrived to deliver water and canned goods.

AHEPA has opened its Emergency Relief Fund to provide assistance to hurricane victims. An initial $15,000 donation to the Houston community and pledged to raise $100,000 by month's end. read more   donate online


AHEPA Attends Dinner in Honor of Greece's Foreign Minister
Supreme President Carl Hollister met President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades (above center) and Greece's Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias at the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations dinner held in honor of Foreign Minister Kotzias (pictured below, right), in New York City, September 21, 2017.

Among those who accompanied Supreme President Hol lister were: Board Vice Chairman Andrew C. Zachariades, PSP; Supreme Tre asurer George Horiates, former Chairman of the Board Nicholas A. Karacostas, PSP; District 6 Governor Ted Stamas, AHEPA Cyprus & Hellenic Affairs Chairman Savas Tsivicos, and Executive Director Basil Mossaidis. Also pictured (above) is  Constantine Iordanou, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Arch Capital Group.

EU ends Greece's deficit procedure in positive signal to markets
Reuters (Sept. 25) 

European Union states decided on Monday to close disciplinary procedures against Greece over its excessive deficit after improvements in Greece's fiscal position, confirming the country's recovery is on the right track. The move, although largely symbolic, s ends a new signal that Greece's public finances are again under control, facilitating the country's plans to tap markets after a successful issue of bonds in July which ended a three-year exile.   read more
 
Greece is fighting for peace in the Middle East
Ekathimerini (Sept. 26) 

The victory in Sunday's German election of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) - albeit with heavy losses - is a cause for concern in Athens as political developments in the European Union's wealthiest nation could punch holes in the narrative of Greece's leftist-led government with regard to a range of issues, not least the Greek bailout program and hopes for debt relief. read more

No negotiations before Cypriot presidential elections in January

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres concluded his meetings - on the sidelines of the General Assembly - with all involved in the Cyprus negotiations and it seems like he drew the conclusion to prolong the "reflection" period, until at the Presidential elections in the Republic of Cyprus, late January. Guterres met last week Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, British Prime Minister Teresa May, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and on Saturday the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.   read more

The very first word in the history of Western literature is "rage" or "wrath." For that is how Homer's "Iliad" begins. Composed some time in the eighth century B.C., it starts with a call to the Muse, the goddess of inspiration, to help tell the story of the "wrath" of Achilles (menin in the original Greek) - and of the incalculable sorrows and the terrible deaths of so many brave warriors that this wrath caused. Homer's epic, set during the mythical war between Greeks and Trojans, is as much about anger, private vendetta and its fatal consequences as it is about heroic combat and the clash of two ancient superpowers.   read more

Outstanding Findings at Ongoing Early Minoan Cemetery Excavation in Petras
The National Herald (Sept. 20) 

An international team of archaeologists headed by the director emerita of the ministry of culture Metaxia Tsipopoulou which is digging at Petras, on the eastern edges of the city of Siteia on Crete, has discovered a large number of gold and silver jewellery, numerous bronze implements (many used for grooming) and other objects, the ministry said on Wednesday.   read more
