More Opportunities through Apprenticeships in 2018
As the holiday season gets into full swing, our teams are connecting with business executives, educators, and public officials to create more apprenticeship opportunities across the country.

If you are interested in joining our apprenticeship programs, here are some important milestones coming up to prepare your company for the year ahead:

  • Dec. 2017: Recruiting of potential apprentices; college placement exams for candidates
  • Jan. 2018: Development of company-specific training plans begins; company interviews with potential apprentices
  • Feb. 2018: Train the Trainer workshops
  • Mar. 2018: Potential jobs/internships for apprentices start
  • May 2018: Window of opportunity closes for effectively reaching high school graduates
  • Summer 2018: Potential jobs/internships for apprentices
  • Aug. 2018: Start of cohort 2018

ICATT Network Companies Opened their Doors for National Apprenticeship Week
National Apprenticeship Week saw eight ICATT Network Companies give students, parents and educators insight into their facilities and products. The open houses highlighted how apprenticeships can be the start of a great career in manufacturing for young Americans. Gregory Keating, Vice President of Operations at Principal Manufacturing Corporation stated, "We are always looking for people who can operate machines and computers because that's where manufacturing is going." This addresses an aspect that was emphasized by many companies during their open houses : Manufacturing today is an advanced high-tech industry with clean and modern facilities. ICATT network companies that hosted open house events included: BBS Automation, BorgWarner, Inc., Bourn & Koch, Inc., Engis Corporation, Fibro, Inc., Herrmann Ultrasonics, Inc., HydraForce, Inc., and J&M Plating, Inc.
Manufacturing Workforce Summit in East Peoria, IL
In November, Mario Kratsch, VP of GACC Midwest, and Dr. Sheila Quirk-Bailey, President of Illinois Central College (ICC) , spoke at the Manufacturing Workforce Summit about how the ICATT Apprenticeship Program and ICC could work together to close the skills gap through apprenticeship programs that combine company-based training and college education. The summit featured discussions about desired outcomes, benefits, costs, funding, and success stories. Participants included manufacturers, workforce intermediaries, workforce board members and staff, public officials, as well as education and economic development leaders. The ICATT team is excited that a group of manufacturers has decided to take the lead in discussing cooperation opportunities through the ICATT Apprenticeship Program for the region in more detail for 2018.
Global Business and Education Conference in Newark, OH
Skills Initiative Manager Joshua Seeberg presented the ICATT Apprenticeship Program at a breakaway session at the Global Business and Education Conference at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) in Newark, OH. The topic was "Skills Initiative for Building a Workforce and Blending Business/Industry & Technical Education", which addressed the workforce crisis and introduced the ICATT Apprenticeship Program as a possible solution. The Workforce Development Innovation Center (WDIC) at COTC, along with partnering organizations Leadership Ohio and the Columbus Council on World Affairs, invited US business leaders, government officials, educators, and university students to discuss the advantages of apprenticeship programs.
Apprenticeship Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations once again to Brose North America, Inc. for being this year's winner of the GACC Apprenticeship Award. The ceremony with over 80 guests took place in Washington, D.C. where the German American Chambers of Commerce (GACCs) presented the “ Apprenticeship Award ” to honor outstanding apprenticeship programs aligned to the standards of the German apprenticeship system in the United States.
GACC South Establishes Skills Advisory Committee
On Oct. 31, GACC South inaugurated its very own Skills Advisory Board. The Committee will give direction, review goals and objectives of the Skills Initiative and advice on the conceptual and strategic focus of GACC South’s work in the field of apprenticeships. Consul General of Germany, Detlev Rünger, opened the reception, followed by Irene Munn, General Counsel and Director of Policy at Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle’s office. Stefanie Jehlitschka, President & CEO of GACC South, handed out Certificates of Appointment to the select members of the Skills Steering Committee:

  • Nicole Koesling, Senior VP HR at Volkswagen Group of America Chattanooga Operations, LLC
  • S.A. de Kock, Managing Partner at Rödl Langford de Kock, LLP
  • Steven Markham, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at GACC South

Lt. Governor’s Business and Education Summit in Griffin, GA
On November 13, GACC South joined Lt. Governor Casey Cagle ’s 10 th Annual Business & Education Summit for the Griffin Region College and Career Academy to participate in a panel discussion - What is GA CATT and GA CATT Mentorship Development?
Panelists included Nicole Heimann, Skills Initiative Manager at GACC South, Steve Cromer, Senior Director of Manufacturing at West Georgia Technical College, David Keller, President and Managing Director of Operations at E.G.O. of North America, and Martin Pleyer, COO at Grenzebach Corporation. The panel covered topics ranging from the purpose and design of the GA CATT program, explanation of the dual style of the German model, defining the role of a mentor, the qualifications and capabilities needed to be a successful mentor, the certification process, and how a mentor works with the apprentices and supports them with Christiani (Technical Institute for Vocational Training) projects.
New Apprenticeship Cluster for International Logistics in Miami, FL
In summer 2018, GACC South will launch an apprenticeship cluster for Logistics, training Freight Forwarding and Logistics Agents in Miami.

To educate companies about the opportunities, GACC South and the German American Business Chamber (GABC) held an exclusive Business Seminar on “How to Build Your Workforce with Dual Apprenticeship Programs”. Nicole Heimann explained to regional employers and stakeholders how to grow globally competitive workforce with standardized and industry driven apprenticeships in the field of logistics and manufacturing.
