Being committed to loving your neighbor as you love yourself is an excellent way to start off the New Year. The longer I live, I see clearly that loving others and receiving love in return are the most beautiful experiences that can happen in a lifetime.

HouseFrom the House

First and foremost, happy new year to you and your families.  May you have a blessed and enjoyable 2016.

For my column this month, I wanted to take an opportunity to discuss the future of our State's transportation infrastructure.  This seems timely to write about since many of us have hit the roads to visit friends and family this holiday season.

This was Hartford Public High School at Broad & Hopkins St from 1891 until 1962 when it was removed to make way for I-84. Hopkins St was also eliminated at
the time. The Brownstone Owl, which is the School mascot was preserved and is now in the current Building on Forest St. More photos are

Exploring Asylum Hill:
Compass Jr. Peacebuilders

The Compass Youth Collaborative has recently expanded into Asylum Hill. Their mission is to work with youth, especially those who show signs of having leadership potential to develop the skills necessary to be successful in life and to be future leaders in the community. The Jr. Peacebuilders Program, in their own words, seeks to provide these youth with "job readiness skills, communication skills and stipends for internship placements.

Asylum Hill Volunteer of the Month: Michelle McFarland

Anyone going to the Mark Twain Branch of the Hartford Public Library and expecting a stereotypical Librarian will be disappointed or more likely stunned. Michelle McFarland, the Branch Manager since the library moved into Hartford Public High School in 2011 is a very different kind of librarian. And it's a good thing.

Decmtg

AHNA December Meeting/Celebration

If you weren't at the December AHNA meeting, don't count on the minutes to tell you everything that went on. That will only capture the usual items, and the presentation by UCONN students about air quality and buses.

Trinity College Research Assistants

As we mentioned in last month's News & Views, AHNA was fortunate to have the assistance of two researchers from Trinity College to assist the Welcoming Committee's Multicultural Center Committee to discover what other parts of the country have been doing in similar situations, trying to obtain a physical place for multiple cultures to meet and both share their own culture and learn about others. So now the results are in.

Carolsing

Carol Sing in Sigourney Square Park

Friday evening, December 18th, found more than 30 hearty souls out in Sigourney Square Park singing Christmas carols. Santa arrived thanks to a ride on a Hartford City Fire truck, along with Mrs. Claus and passed out candy and Christmas hats to all the boys & girls. The carols were led by the sturdy voices of the Youth Challenge Singers, with enough gusto that neighbors came out of their warm homes to join in this annual tradition. State Representative Matt Ritter was there as well as AHNA Chairperson Yvonne Matthews, and of course the tall elf from previous years brought three slightly shorter elves to help Santa spread the Christmas cheer.

bgparty

Boys and Girls Club Christmas Party

Once again, the Asylum Hill Boys & Girls Club hosted a Christmas party for all the children in the neighborhood, and like most every event there, it was big, energetic and a little chaotic.

ballet

Hartford City Ballet Nutcracker

It seems like it just wouldn't be Christmas without a performance of the Nutcracker ballet. One can only imagine how repetitive it might seem for the artists and professionals who are capable of so much more than this one ballet. Still it is so perfectly identified with the season, and it gives so many young dancers an introduction to classical ballet, that it's hard not to be glad for yet another performance when one is presented.
