A SUMMER TO LOVE
Same Sex Marriage and SF AIDS Funding

Two important victories for the LGBTQ and HIV/AIDS communities have given all of us a lot to celebrate this summer.

First, the Supreme Court decisions on DOMA and Prop 8 took big steps towards removing institutional barriers to equality for LGBTQ people.

As Executive Director
Jim Dilley, MD said "Discrimination in whatever form is a particularly pernicious source of stress and a contributor to a range of mental health issues. The Supreme Court rulings not only help to validate the worth of LGBT people and our relationships, but also stand as another step in the long road to full acceptance for LGBT people everywhere."

As an organization dedicated to LGBTQ mental health, AHP is aware of the many ways our clients may be affected by discrimination and homophobia. We are excited to see the tide turning away from discrimination and towards recognition of LGBTQ rights.

Second, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors worked tirelessly in June to fully fund services for people with HIV and AIDS, despite cuts in federal funding.  This means that AHP clients living with HIV/AIDS will not face a $250,000 cut in psychiatry, psychotherapy and case management services they depend on. We are grateful to the hard work of our Board of Supervisors and their commitment to prioritizing services for people living with HIV.

CHECK OUT OUR NEW HIV TESTING VAN!

What do you get when you park your HIV testing van in the Castro over Pride weekend? You get over 60 people  who learn their HIV status!

Our mobile HIV Counseling and Testing (HCAT) Team has tested more than 200 people since the van's debut in May.

 6.27.13 Mobile Van Launch
AHP has been doing mobile HIV testing since 1988, and now, thanks to the Phillip and Melanie Nash Memorial Trust and Dublin Nissan, we finally have our own van to test people in the community. HCAT Coordinator Perry Rhodes says, "Many of the clients who are passing by our van express such gratitude that they can take a test and get results in 15 minutes when they may have otherwise put it off to some other time."

Want to know where we will be testing next? Check out our testing Twitter.
