The Frederick Douglass Community
By the time of his death, leading abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass was the most photographed American of the 19th century. Building the Picture
This spring, the National Gallery presents the first exhibition in Britain to explore the role of architecture within painting. Building the Picture: Architecture in Italian Renaissance Painting aims to increase visitors' appreciation and understanding of some of the most beautiful paintings from the Renaissance. The exhibition is underpinned by the work of AHRC-funded researchers at the University of York, and a new film shines a light on what this research has brought to the exhibition. Research Council data comes to life
The British Library, BBRSC and AHRC challenged the public to create a visualisation showing how funding is apportioned across the UK. The winning entry in the professional category was created by �berResearch, who have created a data map showing the overall distribution of funds across topics, using bubble, placement and colour effects to give more detail on the distribution. In the non-professional category, the winning entry, created by Three Men and a Stato uses the model of a brain. Find out more on our website.

Award nomination for Scottish Renaissance play
An open-air production of a Sixteenth Century Scottish play performed as part of the AHRC-funded 'Staging and Representing the Scottish Renaissance Court' Project, has been nominated for a prestigious Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland. The other side of scientific genius
Just who was Sir Isaac Newton? We know him as one of our most celebrated scientists, but the popular picture of Newton is one that ignores many of his broader interests. AHRC/Design Council - Bristol and Bath design research project

We have been working in partnership with the Design Council over the past two years to demonstrate the key role design plays in creating economic benefits and social value in the UK, and to explore design research in UK universities and its connections with businesses and policymakers. We now wish to test some of these ideas in a study which will examine how businesses and public sector organisations in a particular location use design in their work, and what the impact of this is on their ability to innovate and their economic performance. AHRC and POST Postgraduate Fellowships Scheme
