News
The Frederick Douglass Community

By the time of his death, leading abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass was the most photographed American of the 19th century. The latest AHRC Image Gallery explores the visual legacy of Douglass through the murals which made him a part of communities across the world. Click here to visit the exhibitions.

Building the Picture
This spring, the National Gallery presents the first exhibition in Britain to explore the role of architecture within painting. Building the Picture: Architecture in Italian Renaissance Painting aims to increase visitors' appreciation and understanding of some of the most beautiful paintings from the Renaissance. The exhibition is underpinned by the work of AHRC-funded researchers at the University of York, and a new film shines a light on what this research has brought to the exhibition. Click here to watch the film.

Science in Culture: Ignite
The AHRC's Science in Culture theme recently hosted an event which allowed researchers to demonstrate the excitement of cutting edge research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. You can view the 5 minute films from the event which address the consumption of light therapies, speculative technologies, what we think about colours, and more. Click here to view the Ignite videos.

Research Council data comes to life

The British Library, BBRSC and AHRC challenged the public to create a visualisation showing how funding is apportioned across the UK. The winning entry in the professional category was created by berResearch, who have created a data map showing the overall distribution of funds across topics, using bubble, placement and colour effects to give more detail on the distribution. In the non-professional category, the winning entry, created by Three Men and a Stato uses the model of a brain. Find out more on our website.

Award nomination for Scottish Renaissance play
An open-air production of a Sixteenth Century Scottish play performed as part of the AHRC-funded 'Staging and Representing the Scottish Renaissance Court' Project, has been nominated for a prestigious Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland. It has been nominated in the Best Ensemble Performance Category, sponsored by Equity. Find out more and view an Image Gallery about the production on our website.
The other side of scientific genius

Just who was Sir Isaac Newton? We know him as one of our most celebrated scientists, but the popular picture of Newton is one that ignores many of his broader interests. An AHRC-funded project is shedding light on the real Isaac Newton by publishing a complete online edition of his writings. Find out more on our website.

Resources for schools
If your AHRC-funded project has resulted in the creation of resources suitable for use in schools, we would like to hear from you. Please email [email protected] details of the resources and your research project.

AHRC/Design Council - Bristol and Bath design research project
Call closes 22 May 2014

We have been working in partnership with the Design Council over the past two years to demonstrate the key role design plays in creating economic benefits and social value in the UK, and to explore design research in UK universities and its connections with businesses and policymakers. We now wish to test some of these ideas in a study which will examine how businesses and public sector organisations in a particular location use design in their work, and what the impact of this is on their ability to innovate and their economic performance. Further details are available on our website.
