Associates: BDCS Study Group

The AIA BDCS study group will start on February 17th at 6:30pm at Starbucks on East Blvd.

 

Anyone interested in joining should email Taylor Milner at aiacstudygroup@gmail.com

 

Taylor can provide information for study materials and etc.

 

Currently the study group meets every Tuesday at 6:30pm. The location is subject to change based on group size but is currently held at the Starbucks on East Blvd.

The Mentorship Exchange concept incorporates a cross-section of the profession (students, associates, licensed professionals and senior professionals) so it takes ALL levels to make the program successful.

UNCC Colloquium: Antonio Martinez
"Design-Build Health Clinics in the Republic of Congo"

Antonio Martinez is an SoA Alum and currently project manager of 15 off-grid Health Centers under construction in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For the past two years, he has been collaborating with IMA World Health Organization and IMCK (DRCongo) on renovating, building, and designing medical centers in rural and urban DRCongo. Construction of the new Mama Wetu Health Center broke ground in February 2014, launching the first of 200 new health centers that the "Access to Primary Health Care Project" (ASSP) will build over the next four years. More details here

Sean Gallagher is an Associate at Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) in New York and an alumnus of the SoA at UNC Charlotte.  His professional experience includes state and federal projects that explore the relationships between government investments, industrial activities and community development. Aberrant Architectures? Diller + Scofidio at the Whitney Museum

Architects Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio don't consider their work aberrant. The husband/wife pair, who founded the firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro in the 1970s and in 1999 became the first architects to receive a MacArthur "genius" award, acquired the "aberrant" label during their midcareer retrospective at the Whitney Museum in New York City. Buy tickets online here

CANstruction Call for Teams

Show off your design skills while doing something great for the community! Join AIA Charlotte in demonstrating the power of design in a month-long celebration of Architecture, kicking off with the CANstruction event.

 

All cans used in the builds will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank at the conclusion of the week.

 

A distinguished jury will select and award teams for the following categories: Best Meal, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, and People's Choice.

 

Registration Fee: $150 per team | Limit 5 people per team. Fee includes CANstruction t-shirts for team members.

Emerging Professionals: Private tour of the current Bechtler Museum of Modern Art Exhibit "British Invasion"

Thursday, February 12 | 5:30 p.m.

Bechtler  | 420 S. Tryon St.

 

Interested in learning more about Modern Art? Join the AIA YAF in a private guided tour of the current exhibit at the Bechtler. "British Invasion" is a representation of British art found principally in the Bechtler collection from the 1950s through the 1970s. The works include prints, drawings, sculpture and paintings. This tour will be led and narrated by a Becthler docent who will introduce the collection and explain some of the history and significance of the artists and their art. This will be followed up by a happy hour afterwards!

2015 Architecture Business Plan Competition

Details were recently announced for the 2015 Architecture Business Plan Competition, sponsored by Charrette Venture Group and BQE ArchiOffice. The competition is open to registered architects in the U.S. and Canada who are considering starting their own design firm or who have started a firm in the past ten years. The first prize winner will receive $10,000, and there is no cost to enter.

Community Project for Female Architects: Junior Girls Day Out

The award-winning "Junior Girls Day Out" Community Project was founded in Charleston, South Carolina in November 2007 as a means of providing positive outlets for young girls, helping them become well-rounded individuals, and inspiring them to reach their goals in life. 

 

The program is coming to Charlotte this year and is looking for female architects to participate! The career shadowing experience allows each girl to be paired with a professional woman in her career setting for 3-4 hours during the month of April.
