Historic Preservation as Sustainable Development
The Historic Preservation program in Havana, Cuba has knitted together participatory preservation, social projects and adaptive reuse that still respects cultural patrimony, all with so few resources that buildings that have not yet been restored have structural failures every day. Despite the increasing openness between the United States and Cuba, the island is still largely separated from the U.S., but is poised to change dramatically once more foreign investment is allowed. The success and challenges of historic preservation in Cuba to date are impressive, and it is unclear how it will continue to develop. Emily Dallmeyer's research in Havana and around Cuba can serve as a window to this developing situation.
