David J. Segmiller, Managing Principal of the Perkins Eastman, has been elevated to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows. Election to Fellow status (FAIA) is awarded by a jury of peers and recognizes architects who have made significant contributions to society on a national level and achieved a standard of excellence in their profession. For the last 28 years, David has committed his career to improving resident quality of life, principally within the senior housing and care industry.

"I am honored to join this distinguished group of architects," said Segmiller. "It is the culmination of a decades-long journey within the senior living design and development community that I have long been a collaborator in, to establish the high standards of care and quality of life that our most senior citizens enjoy today."

David J. Segmiller, FAIA, joined Perkins Eastman in 2011. His work encompasses a transformative understanding of quality of life in campus settings, high rise buildings, urban solutions, and smaller care settings. Beginning in 1988, and faced with an industry mired in institutional models of care, he has led and personally designed over 35 Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) in addition to more than 20 smaller, single care facilities. These projects are located throughout the U.S., as well as in the UK and China, and have been recognized with dozens of awards in senior housing design.

"We are very pleased that the AIA has recognized David's many accomplishments as the head of our Charlotte office and as an innovative national leader in senior living design," said Bradford Perkins, FAIA, Chairman and CEO of Perkins Eastman.

David has served his profession as a leader of AIA Baltimore, The Maryland Society of Architects, The Urban Land Institute (ULI), LeadingAge, and the Assisted Living Federation of America. Among his myriad accomplishments, David was instrumental in engaging Active Adult and CCRC developers into the ULI Senior Housing Council for the open sharing of ideas and philosophies. His most recent white paper, "  The State of Senior Living in the Carolinas," was the result of David's extensive surveying various CCRC leaders and service providers in the Carolinas.

The 2016 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated 149 AIA members to its prestigious College of Fellows. Out of a total AIA membership of over 88,000 there are over 3,200 members distinguished with this honor.
The 2016 Fellows will be honored at an investiture ceremony at the 2016 National AIA Convention.
