AIA National News
ABI Shows Third Straight Decline in June
Architecture firms reported that the downward slide in billings that began this spring has continued into June. The national Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score was 45.9 for the month, not straying far from the 45.8 rating reported for May. These two steep declines follow a modest drop in April, so the ABI has now seen three consecutive monthly declines after recording five straight monthly increases. Though inquiries for new projects continue to be positive they remain well below the levels seen earlier this year and in late 2011, so a quick recovery in billings seems unlikely.
Radio, TV Projects Bring AIA To Forefront of Public Attention
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) serves as the public voice for the architecture profession. In an effort to extend the reach of its voice, our national component is taking advantage of two opportunities to raise public awareness about architects and architecture.
AIA is now sponsoring National Public Radio's (NPR) Cities Project, a weekly series that will report on trends in urban life and the challenges facing today's cities. Airing as a part of "All Things Considered," the segment questions how we want to live and how we want our cities to be. CLICK HERE to view the schedule for NPR's Cities Project. South Bend, IN was featured on July 5, 2012.
Further extending its voice through television, AIA is sponsoring "Cool Spaces," a brand new program hosted by Stephen Chung, AIA for PBS Primetime. Members may recognize Chung from the 2012 AIA National Convention in Washington, DC where he hosted the "Architect Live" broadcast center. Debuting this Fall, "Cool Spaces" profiles North America's most innovative structures that include a strong public space element. The goal of the show is to enlighten the public about what architects do and the impact that architecture has on our lives. CLICK HERE to view more about "Cool Spaces" and its host Stephen Chung, AIA.
Resources for Members on the Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will affect most Americans in some way, shape or form over the coming years. As consumers of health care, business owners who provide health insurance to employees, and designers of health facilities, AIA members will be a part of this reform whether they choose to or not.
In a statement released last month, Andrew Goldberg, Assoc. AIA, Managing Director of Government Relations and Outreach, stated, "Architects are Democrats, Republicans and Independents like the citizens they serve. The AIA's role will continue to be examining the details of the law and educating members about how it will impact them, providing them with the most objective and fact-based information available."
To that end, the AIA will provide resources to members about the law and its implementation through articles, webinars and other media over the coming months. To read more about the ACA and what it means for architects CLICK HERE. |

Indiana Bell Telephone Company building photograph
Drawings and Documents Archive at Ball State University Libraries
In a daring maneuver, architects at Vonnegut, Bohn & Mueller not only moved and pivoted the 11,000 ton, 8 story Indiana Bell Telephone Company building 152 feet, but they did it with all of the employees inside and without a dropped call. This photograph from the Drawings + Documents Archive's Wright, Porteous & Lowe Collection shows the building in the process of pivoting it to face New York Street. The wooden rotating sidewalk enabled workers to enter and exit during the move, which took a month. To learn more about this piece of Indiana's architectural history, visit the Archive's blog at http://ddarchive.blogspot.com/. |
