State Legislature Set to Adjourn March 14, 2014

You can still make a positive impact but you must act quickly!

March 10, 2014

This is the last week of the 2014 session of the Indiana General Assembly. The session will adjourn sine die March 14.  The origin of the term sine die, used commonly in legislative parlance, is Latin meaning without fixing a day for future action or meeting.

(L-R) 2014 AIA Indiana President Ron Searcy, AIA and 2014 AIA Indiana Vice President Jenelle Smagala, AIA.

AIA Indiana is still lobbying on a few remaining issues including mass transit, nursing home construction ban, and the elimination of Indiana's clean energy program. Your help is needed right now! Please contact your state legislators and Governor Pence today and use your clout as an Indiana architect to make an impact. More detailed information and talking points regarding these matters are listed below.

SB 176 - Central Indiana Transit.

SB 176, authored by Sen. Pat Miller (R - Indianapolis) and Sen. Brent Waltz (R - Greenwood), provides for the establishment or expansion of public transportation services in eligible central Indiana counties through local public questions placed on the ballot under ordinances adopted by the fiscal body of the eligible counties.

Your help is needed. Please contact your state legislators and ask them to support SB 176. CLICK HERE to view talking points regarding the mass transit issue.

SB 340 - Demand side management programs.

SB 340, authored by Sen. James Merritt (R - Indianapolis) will end the state's energy efficiency program by prohibiting the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) from requiring utilities to meet any energy savings goals. SB 340 would also prohibit the IURC from extending or entering into a new contract to run the statewide Energizing Indiana program. AIA Indiana is opposed to this bill.

Passage of SB 340 into law would likely lead to higher electricity rates, a higher carbon footprint for Indiana (which is already the highest in the Midwest), and harm Indiana's emerging energy efficiency job creating-sector. CLICK HERE to view talking points regarding SB 340.

The Senate is voting on SB 340 this afternoon. Please contact your state senator ASAP and ask them to oppose this bill!

Also, please contact Governor Pence and ask him to veto SB 340! Click on the following link to contact Governor Pence - http://www.in.gov/gov/2333.htm.

SB 173 - Nursing facility moratorium.

SB 173, authored by Sen. Pat Miller (R - Indianapolis), would ban all nursing home construction in the state. There is currently a Medicaid moratorium which expires on June 30, 2014. Some nursing home operators are supporting a full moratorium on any new nursing bed licenses to limit competition in the market. Under the proposed bill, facilities that construct any nursing homes, including private pay and Medicare, would be prohibited from doing so. Passage of this bill would have a negative impact on many AIA Indiana members and Hoosier communities and jobs. CLICK HERE to view SB 173 talking points.
