Jonathan Spodek Earns Prestigious AIA College of Fellows Distinction
Jonathan Spodek, FAIA, associate professor of architecture at a Ball State University, has been elected into the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, which recognizes significant national contributions to the architecture profession and society. It's one of the highest honors an architect can receive from his peers.
The honor comes as little surprise to those who know Spodek, his work and his long list of accomplishments, especially in historic preservation and heritage conservation, where he is known internationally.
As a young architect, Spodek spent a year at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, where he was part of a five-member team that documented every inch of the national landmark as part of a project co-sponsored by the International Council of Monuments and Sites and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation. The documentation of Monticello is archived in the Library of Congress. He continued his work with ICOMOS, and traveled to Hungary as part of an exchange program for young, heritage conservation professionals.
More recently, he founded ecoRehab, a nonprofit organization that works to rehabilitate vacant and abandoned homes in the Muncie area. That organization grew out of the design studio he leads for architecture students at Ball State.
His work with ecoRehab has earned him multiple awards and recognitions, including the 2014 Excellence in Immersive Learning at Ball State and the Mary Francis Abel Award from the City of Muncie.
"I have rarely witnessed this level of achievement in my 47 years on the faculty of Ball State, a faculty that I consider to be outstanding," said Tony Costello, FAIA, in recommending Spodek for the Fellowship honor.
Spodek joined the Ball State faculty in 1998, and teaches design studios and courses in building technology. He received both his bachelor's and masters' degrees in architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Congratulations Jonathan!
