President's Message:
Paul Dannels

I often remark that my home and office are in a suburb of Detroit named Ann Arbor. I personally feel that all AIA Michigan Members are either from Detroit, or Detroit neighbors. You can disagree; that's just my opinion.

In the past few weeks I have been trying hard NOT to share my opinions.  Instead, I have been sharing the consensus of the AIA Michigan Board regarding upcoming relocation of our office to Midtown Detroit. That unity among the Board is important. I've had a number of conversations and correspondences with members who feel our office should be in Lansing, or that we should remain in Beaubien House. Some of those conversations have been passionate and some more philosophical. All have been thoughtful and I'm continually grateful for the opportunity to speak with any who have questions or concerns about the Board's position and our physical location.

But after attending to questions about the move from the perspective of the Board, some still wonder what my opinion is after all.  Let me share two thoughts.  It's my opinion that AIA Michigan needs to provide exceptional service and support to its Chapters.  It's also my opinion that AIA Detroit needs to continue to build its own unique identity. Those are two things of utmost importance to me as we move down a path not to just new office space, but to continually renewed relevance to our profession... just my opinion.

Always feel free to contact me... [email protected]

...and wishing you the best in your practice...

Executive Director's Message:
Cathy HeadshotHappy July!

I will be travelling to Mackinac Island for the Mid Summer Conference next week and am looking forward to seeing many of you on the island. This event serves as our last summer event before our fall season opens. This year we have a new conference to add to our line-up and an innovative revamp of a current event. Here is what you can look forward to this fall:

Many of you have registered for the new Green Health Summit in your inbox. The summit, held on September 8th, will kick-off Stair Week in Michigan. The committee has gathered an impressive group of speakers and panelists from across the country for the summit and we know it will reinforce Michigan's prominence in the evolution of design. Spaces are limited for the conference, so be sure to register as soon as possible!

The 2nd Annual Tigers Tailgate will be held this year on September 12th. We will be tailgating at the DAC for the tasty food, great view of the stadium and short stroll to the game. The event had such a positive response last year that we have increased the number of tickets this year and secured an even better seating block! Be sure to register for your ticket today!

After cheering for the Tigers in the heart of the Motor City, escape to a rustic setting away from the traffic and congestion at the Design Retreat, which will commemorate its 25th anniversary this year. The Retreat will be held September 19-20th and the committee has planned special activities and events to celebrate the occasion! The 2014 Korab Award Winner and founder of the Heidelberg Project, Tyree Guyton, will be one of our special guests at the retreat. Look forward to his compelling talk and a new design competition among other favorite activities. More information will be coming soon, so mark your calendar for this much-anticipated event!

In the fall there will be an important change to the AIA Michigan event calendar. The Annual Meeting usually falls at the end of October and this year it will be held in combination with the Leadership Retreat, (usually held in January). This year's Annual Meeting + Leadership Conference will be held from October 9-11th and will offer members an opportunity for leadership training, continuing education and several exciting tours! Instead of waiting until January to dig into the year, your local chapter boards will be ready to start innovating after your Board Transition! Mark your calendar for October 9-11th and look for more announcements in the coming weeks!

I would love to hear your ideas about our programs and events, so please contact me anytime and I hope to see you at an AIA Michigan event this summer!

The Grapevine
  •  The Speakers Bureau is back in action! The AIAMI Public Awareness Committee has been working diligently to re-establish and re-invigorate the organization's once popular Speakers Bureau. The mission statement for the Public Awareness Committee reads, "Raise the visibility of architects and the architecture profession through AIA by communicating the high value architects add to our clients and communities." The new AIA/MAF Speakers Bureau is focused directly on that mission and will call upon its talented and enthusiastic membership to prepare and present perspectives about architecture aimed at educating and entertaining the public. The call for presentation is now open and interested parties should review the Speakers Bureau webpage for information. Presentation summaries are available for viewing on the Speakers Bureau presentation page.

  • The Progressive Architecture (P/A) Awards recognize unbuilt projects demonstrating overall design excellence and innovation. This year marks the 62nd annual celebration and judging will take place in November 2014. Winning entries will be notified in December 2014, published in the February 2015 issue of ARCHITECT, and honored at a celebration in New York in February 2015. Friday, October 31, 2014 is the submission deadline for standard entries, so don't wait to register!
