Happy Monday!
This week we are busy preparing for the AIA Michigan Design Awards celebration on June 7, 2014 at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum! The brochure is available on our website so be sure to check out all the great projects and exemplary honorees and register today!!
The AIA encourages all types on non-traditional practice, but has always supported licensure within the architectural profession. To ensure that the profession remains strong, we want to help get more Michigan architects licensed! If you feel strongly about licensure, please review the A.R.E. Call for Speakers info sheet to choose how you can help.
If the idea of earning continuing education while on vacation is appealing to you, check out the Volterra trip information in the article below. You will earn 24 HSW hours, (that's your entire 2-year State of Michigan license requirement), while enjoying all the scenery, architecture and food that Italy's most beautiful region has to offer. Spaces are limited, so sign up today!
June isn't far away, so please mark your calendar for the Dumke Collection celebration on June 11th! We look forward to seeing this special collection dedicated at the Baldwin Library; be sure to read the full invitation and RSVP today!
Have a great week and remember to contact me anytime with your ideas or if you would like to join a committee!

Support Ned Apigian: Candidate for District 11! |
NED APIGIAN, AIA
Candidate for Michigan State House District 11
[Dearborn Heights (part), Garden city, Inkster, Livonia (part), Westland]
Dear Colleague,
As fellow design professionals, primarily Architects who reside in the cities of Dearborn Heights, Inkster, Garden City, Westland and Livonia which primarily comprises the 11th District of the State of Michigan House of Representatives and others of interest is the reason for this invitation.
A fellow Architect, Ned Apigian, AIA who also is an Elected Official, in his second (4) year term as a Councilman in the City of Dearborn Heights has decided to run for the open seat in the 11th District. Subsequently, we are primarily asking those of us most associated with the above Communities which comprise the 11th District to help one of our own to be elected, which will be beneficial to us collectively as a profession. Presently, only one engineer and a surveyor are legislators, NO Architects.
Ned has earned: two Associate Degrees, In Liberal Arts and Science, from the Henry Ford Community College; a Bachelors Degree In Architecture, from the University of Detroit; and a Masters Degree, in Urban Planning from Wayne State University. Ned is a NCARB Certified Architect, licensed in the State of Michigan, as an Architect; and as a Professional Community Planner; and also as a Residential Builder.
Please join us to meet Ned at my office on Wednesday May 28th at 6:00pm and let's see how we can all help him get elected for our mutual Professional benefit.
Fill out the bottom of the attached form and fax in your RSVP and mail your check to Tiseo Architects, Inc.
Thanks: Benedetto Tiseo, FAIA, NCARB

Continuing Education Opportunity of the Week: Commercial Wood Window Installation Systems |
Water leakage through the building envelope continues to be one of the major reasons for litigation involving architects. This course provides an introduction to water management in commercial window systems. The course begins with a review of the basic principles involved in preventing water leakage in wall systems. The course then explores the ways that these basic principles can and should be applied to windows as well. Water leakage prevention strategies for three distinct window applications - punched openings, ribbon windows and window walls - are explained, including a detailed case study of a large installation in an historic building. The course ends with a review of a series of strategies for ensuring that the performance specified for a commercial window system is actually achieved in the field.
Doors will open at 5pm with program starting at 5:45pm. Food and beverage will be provided. Provider: Pella Windows
The program meets the AIA/CES criteria for HSW. Members will receive 1 Learning Unit.
Learning Objectives: - Discuss the ways water penetrates the building envelope. - Explain the concepts of water leakage and describe safe practices for preventing water leakage in buildings. - Describe how window systems can be detailed into various wall types to minimize water leakage at the interface between the window and the wall, thus contributing to occupant health and welfare. - Evaluate various strategies for ensuring that the specified performance is achieved so indoor environments are livable, comfortable, and healthy.
