NOVEMBER 24TH IS MAKE OR BREAK DAY FOR TORONTO ELEPHANTS!
Background
On October 25, 2011, City of Toronto council voted 31 - 4 in favour of a motion to move the Toronto Zoo's three surviving African elephants, Toka, Thika and Iringa, to the PAWS sanctuary in California. That motion followed an earlier May 2011 decision by the Toronto Zoo Board of Management to end the zoo's elephant program and relocate the elephants.

November 24th
The Toronto Zoo Board of Management (BoM) is meeting next Thursday November 24th at 2 pm in Committee Room 2 at Toronto City Hall. We understand two City of Toronto councillors may introduce a motion asking the BoM to ignore the decision made by the City of Toronto Council to send the elephants to the PAWS sanctuary.
Now, more than ever, the elephants need your help.
Please make plans to attend the November 24th meeting to support the City of Toronto Council decision to send the elephants to the PAWS sanctuary.
If you feel comfortable speaking to the issue, please do.
Each person will be allowed only 3 minutes to speak and Board members are allowed to ask questions. To register as a speaker, email Dela Ting at zoobd@toronto.ca and ask to be added to the agenda to speak to the elephant issue. You must contact her before 2pm on Monday to get on the list.
Support the elephants by asking the Board to follow the direction of Council, to move forward with preparations for moving the elephants to PAWS and to not allow any further delays in the process. Even if they accept this decision next week, it will still take a few months to get the permits and to train the elephants so they will likely be moved in April, however if they delay the process further they could end up staying in Toronto well into next year or even over yet another winter.
If you don't feel comfortable speaking at the meeting, please come out anyway, there will be t-shirts available for anyone who wants to show the Board that they support the elephants going to PAWS.
