ACTION ALERT REMINDER
April 4, 2017

There are differences now between what the Senate and House
recommend for the appropriations needed to fully fund 2017-2018 DCA grants.

You can help secure the highest appropriations possible
for 2017-2018 DCA grants --
please take action now.

Below is the Action Alert we sent on March 31.  If you followed through, thank you.  If you and other arts and culture advocates have not taken the steps outlined below, PLEASE take them before this Saturday, April 8.

See below for details AND please take action now --
the sooner, the better.

Number 1
What are the current appropriation recommendations to fund the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs (DCA) 2017-2018 grants?

Review what is currently recommended to fund 2017-2018 DCA grants here:   This document is a side-by-side look at the 2017-2018 appropriation recommendations by Senate TED Chairman Jeff Brandes and House TED Chairman Clay Ingram as of 3-28-17 that would fund the recommended 2017-2018 DCA grants.

Quick Highlights as of 3-28-2017 of what Senate TED and House TED Chairmen Recommend for
2017-2018 DCA Grants:

Cultural and Museum Grants -- Senate TED Chairman Brandes recommends $18,190,046, which is $7,061,922 more for Cultural and Museum Grants than the House TED Chairman Ingram recommends at $11,128,124.

Go here to see what the DCA grants might be at these different appropriation- level recommendations.  Our goal is to secure the highest possible appropriation for this line item to provide all 480 recommended grant applicants with grants that are closest to the grant amounts they qualify for under this category.

Culture Builds Florida Grants -- both Chairmen Brandes and Ingram recommend full funding at $2,320,109, which would fund all 110 grants;

Cultural Facilities Grants -- House TED Chairman Ingram recommends full funding for Cultural Facilities Grants at $11,591,554; Senate TED Chairman Brandes recommends $7,211,940.  Our goal is to secure the House's position on Cultural Facilities Grants, which would fund all 36 DCA grants in this category.

Cultural Endowment Program -- Neither chairman, to date, recommends funding for this category.

What would the Cultural and Museum grants be at four different appropriation levels?

Check the status here of what the 2017-2018 Cultural and Museum Grants would be in your county for the recommended grantees for this category.

Number 3
Who should you and other advocates send emails of thanks and encouraging "asks" to
before Saturday, April 8? The sooner you take action, the better.

Here are the names and emails of Senate and House leadership, along with a list of their legislative assistants, to send thank you emails to and encouraging "asks" BEFORE the end of the day on Wednesday, April 5.  There are three legislative leaders in the Senate and three legislative leaders in the House that need to hear from you NOW.

IMPORTANT FIRST STEP:
Please personalize your first sentence in each of your emails and in the subject box of each of your emails:

For example:

My name is _____and our not-for-profit organization is ________, which is based in _________County.  It went through an established state application and review process to be recommended for a Cultural and Museum Grant for $150,000 (use whichever grant category your organization is recommended for funding under, e.g., Cultural and Museum Grants, Culture Builds Florida, Cultural Facilities, Cultural Endowment and the specific grant amount it's recommended for --   access county-by-county list here).  This state grant will assist us in support of____jobs and leveraging other private and public dollars needed to produce our programs.

OR

My name is____________and I live and work in ________County.  I'm writing to encourage you to support funding for all of the ___recommended Florida Division of Cultural Affairs (DCA) grants based in my county.  These are wise state investments that help these not-for-profit cultural organizations leverage millions in matching dollars to produce arts and culture programs for me, my family, friends, and visitors to our county.

IMPORTANT NEXT STEP:
Note that the suggested email copy below is different for the SENATE leadership and the HOUSE leadership, because what is recommended is different for two of the DCA grant-funding categories: Cultural and Museum Grants and Cultural Facilities Grants.

Once you personalize the first sentence, edit the following email copy below to best reflect your organization's needs and requests and/or your entire county's DCA grant requests.  Go here to see which organizations are recommended for 2017-2018 DCA grants in your county.

Please edit to make your own; however, keep the main points and be polite and thankful for these appropriation recommendations.
It's a challenging budget year for all of our legislators.

Dear_________:

Your personal first sentence/paragraph -- see above.

Thank you for your leadership to recommend appropriations to fund the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs (DCA) 2017-2018 grants:

Cultural and Museum Grants:

Thank you so much for recommending $18,190,046, which is close to the current FY 2017 appropriation of $19 million.  As you know, this is the DCA program that supports through matching general program support grants 480 not-for-profit organizations.  Please, if possible, provide as much in this line item so these 480 grants can come as close as possible to receive their full qualified grant amounts.  Here is a side-by-side   document that shows what these grants would be funded at different appropriation levels.  These grants support thousands of jobs throughout the state and leverage millions in other necessary matching private and public dollars.  They also return to local and state government treasuries $5 to every $1 invested.  They create greater access to a diversity of cultural programs for residents and tourists.

Culture Builds Florida Grants:

Thank you for recommending full funding for these 110 grants to support specific cultural projects throughout the state.  The House also agrees to fully fund these grants.

Cultural Facilities Grants:

Thank you for recommending appropriations that will fully fund the first 22 on the ranked list of 36 grantees.  If you can agree with the House TED recommendation of $11,591,554, that would ensure all 36 recommended cultural facilities grants are funded.

Thank you so much for your time, consideration, and leadership.  Here is a county-by-county list of all of the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs (DCA) 2017-2018 recommended grants by specific grant-funding categories and what grant amounts they qualify for in FY 2017-2018.

If I may provide you with additional information on the positive impact of these state investments, please let me know.

Sincerely,
