The Alberta Lawyers Insurance Exchange Advisory Board has approved the annual levy at $4,550 (plus GST) per insured lawyer, an increase of $575 over last year’s levy.  This year’s higher levy was required due to a few factors, the most notable being increased claims against insured Alberta lawyers. Further, the insurance program’s investment income was significantly less than last year’s, reducing the amount of subsidy that the Board could apply to lower the levy.  Last year, the Board approved a subsidy from accumulated surplus of $350 per insured lawyer; this year the subsidy was $284.
