Lensless Imaging of Magnetic Nanostructures
The high brightness and coherence of the ALS's soft x-rays have enabled a group of scientists, working at ALS Beamline 12.0.2
, to use a new, lensless x-ray method involving iterative mathematical algorithms to view nanometer-scale magnetic structures in an alloy for the first time. Read more...

2012 NUFO Exhibition on Capitol Hill
The National User Facility Organization (NUFO) has again been invited to showcase user facility science at an outreach event on Capitol Hill on March 28-29, 2012. This event will highlight the significant and important role that scientific user facilities play in science education, economic competitiveness, fundamental knowledge, and scientific achievements. It will consist of back-to-back exhibits in the House and Senate Office buildings and will include posters from each NUFO facility. In addition, there will be specialty posters on industrial involvement and small business generation, and scientific accomplishments. Scientists from each user facility will be on hand to answer questions.
Synchrotron Radiation in Polymer Science V Conference (SRPS5)
March 30-April 12, 2012, San Francisco, CA
SRPS5, organized by Berkeley Lab and SLAC, will focus on spectroscopy, microscopy, ordering phenomena, and energy applications in polymer sciences.
NGLS@Noon, Friday, March 30, User Support Building, R15-253
Robert Kaindl of the Ultrafast Materials Program will discuss the challenges and opportunities for correlated electron physics at ultrafast time scales.
2012 Mexican Synchrotron Radiation Users' Meeting (MESYRUM)
June 6-8, 2012, University of Guanajuato, Campus León
Registration deadline is May 21; abstracts due May 28.
ALS Science Café, Tuesday, May 15, User Support Building, R15-253
Tentatively planned speakers are Peter Fischer (ALS), Corie Ralston (PBD), and Scott Sanford (NASA/Ames).
For the user runs from February 22 to March 11, 2012, the beam reliability [(time scheduled - time lost)/time scheduled)] was 91.7%. For this period, the mean time between failures (MTBF) was 21.0 hours, and the mean time to recovery (MTTR) was 119 minutes. There were no significant interruptions.
More detailed information on reliability is available on the ALS reliability bulletin board, which is located in the hallway between the ALS and the control room in Building 80. Questions about beam reliability should be directed to Dave Richardson (DBRichardson@lbl.gov
