Cybersecurity Self-Assessment Tool Released
for Small and Medium Sized Businesses
According to the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS), in order to qualify for DoD contracts, businesses would not be allowed to have any security system gaps when full compliance with the NIST guidelines becomes mandatory on December 31, 2017.  As such The U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released the draft Baldrige Cybersecurity Excellence Builder, a self-assessment tool to help organizations better understand the effectiveness of their cybersecurity risk management efforts.

Collaboration Launches New Apprenticeship Program
at Hawker Pacific Aerospace
Truly a collaborative effort! On Tuesday, August 23 rd  2016, Hawker Pacific Aerospace signed their Department of Labor (DOL) Standards for Apprenticeship. This moment was preceded by a couple of months of developmental work between the DOL and Hawker Pacific, and prior to that there was quite a bit of time dedicated to shepherding the idea to the place of concentrated action. Apprenticeship is not a common practice these days, and companies do not have the handy blueprints or natural wherewithal of how to put one together. It takes some doing. In this case, the glue was Goodwill of Southern California.

Two AMP SoCal Partners Win SBA Growth Accelerator Fund Competition
On August 31, 2016, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Investment and Innovation, announced 68 winners of SBA’s third annual Growth Accelerator Fund Competition. The recipients will receive a total of $3.4 million in prizes to boost the economic impact of accelerators across 32 states and the District of Columbia. Two winners are AMP SoCal Partners; the  Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator and  CONNECT in San Diego. Each organization will receive a cash prize of $50,000 from the SBA.

The purpose of the competition was to draw attention and funding to parts of the country where there are gaps in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. While there are entrepreneurial activities occurring nationwide, some are better supported by private sector ecosystems than others. SBA has created connective tissue among the over 200 winning entrepreneurial ecosystems now part of the Growth Accelerator Fund Competition program.
