Celebrating Multiculturalism Day and
Canada Day

The ANC hosted its 5th annual Multicultural Family Sports Day to celebrate Canadian Multiculturalism Day and Canada Day.
The event included a variety of family-oriented games, sports, and activities as well as face-painting, bouncy castles, and a barbeque.
The ANC would like to extend its thanks to those funders who helped make this year's event a success: Government of Canada, Scotiabank, Frontline Action, Harris Ryan Chartered Accountants, Lady Cove Women’s Choir, Participaction 150 Play List, Fortis, Project Kindness, and Canadian Tire.
We would also like to thank the following groups for their participation and contribution: Canadian Cancer Society, the City of St. John's and its REAL Program, Parks Canada, Cal LeGrow, and Cricket NL.

The ANC, in collaboration with the City of St. John’s, held its second annual World Refugee Day Photo Exhibition at City Hall from June 20 to July 11, 2017.
|

The ANC would like to congratulate one of its interpreters, Meriaf Adhanom, for completing Level 1 Adult Basic Education (ABE) at the Rabbittown Learners Program.

Congratulations to Luwam, Yoursalem, and Sophonie for completing their first Tely 10 Mile Road Race and a sincere thanks to the Nautilus Running Club for helping them train!

Government-Assisted Refugee (GAR) Update
|
|
As of July 31, 2017, the ANC has helped welcome and resettle 102 GARs arriving in Newfoundland and Labrador, including 39 from Syria.
|

The Association is seeking volunteers to support the following programs:
|
|
After-School Program
Volunteers provide assistance for at least one hour per week during the following times:
- St. Theresa's - Mondays from 3:00-4:00
- Leary's Brook - Tuesdays from 2:40-4:00
- Bishop Abraham - Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00
- St. Andrew's - Thursdays from 2:30-4:00
This Program provides homework support to newcomer children in a group environment, as well as the opportunity to participate in a variety of recreational and social activities. Volunteers assist by:
- Aiding children with homework, assignments, and projects
- Participating in group activities
- Helping with event logistics (setting up, etc.)

Newcomer Match Program
The Newcomer Match Program pairs volunteers with newcomers to Canada to help them adjust to life in their new community. Volunteers meet with their match for two hours per week for six months to offer:
- An opportunity to practice English
- Information on Canadian customs, culture, and society
- Information on community resources
- Insight into life in Newfoundland and Labrador
Each participant in the Newcomer Match Program has their own set of goals and, depending on these goals, volunteers may perform a number of activities, including:
- Practicing conversational English
- Assisting with reading and writing
- Visiting organizations/groups that are of interest to the participant

ESL Conversation Circle Program
The ESL Conversation Circle Program is delivered at the ANC’s ESL Training Centre on Mondays from 1-2 pm. The program provides ESL learners with the opportunity to engage with native English speakers on a variety of topics in a friendly, relaxed environment. Volunteers assist by:
- Facilitating a conversation with 1-3 students
- Asking questions and sharing information
- Assisting students with vocabulary and pronunciation

ESL Evening Classes – The ANC’s ESL Evening Classes will be back on September 12. Classes will be delivered every Tuesday from 7-9 pm at the ESL Training Centre on Smithville Crescent and are offered at 4 different levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Pronunciation.
