Hit Us With Your Best Shot
It’s contest time and APMSA is seeking creative podiatric students with an interest in photography to submit action oriented or podiatry related photographs for use in our communications. Your photos could be showcased in First Step, APMSA e-News, the APMSA website or on our Facebook page. The contest is open to all students currently attending a college of podiatric medicine and falls into two categories:

1) Podiatric medicine related and
2) action/leisure. Podiatric related photos may include foot care, research, service work, or academia. Action/leisure photos may include individuals or groups in motion using their feet such as playing tennis or running a marathon.
All contest entries must be received by September 4, 2016 and will be reviewed by the APMSA Public Relations Committee. Creative and professional photos are expected to reflect the mission of the APMSA. The photo receiving the most votes in each category wins. An article about the photographer(s) and his/her photo will be placed in First Step and on the APMSA website. The top photo contest winner in each category will receive a free pair of ASICS shoes of their choice up to $100 from the APMSA ASICS Fall 2016 collection.

DOJ Settles Bias Claims Against 121 Residency Programs

The Justice Department reached a settlement with 121 podiatry residency programs as well as the American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) over claims that they illegally discriminated against U.S. workers. The AACPM and the residency programs created and published hundreds of job postings between 2013 and 2015 that said the jobs were open only to U.S. citizens, when there was no legal authorization or requirement for the restriction, the DOJ said. Several work-authorized immigrants who aren't U.S. citizens reported that they were deterred from applying, while at least two lawful permanent residents were rejected from residencies because of their citizenship status.

Discriminating against job applicants on the basis of their citizenship or immigration status is illegal under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Although the residency programs and AACPM aren't admitting to violating the law, they did agree to pay $141,500 and $65,000, respectively, to settle the charges.
