ANYA RUBIN

Anya Rubin's artwork mirrors the social, political, and spiritual conditions of contemporary culture. Her images capture the essence of a reality where everything is interconnected and information is available at the same moment as an event occurs.
Working in painting, mixed media, and digital rendering, Rubin's work reflects the influence of Abstract Expressionism, recording the Zeitgeist of our age through figures, historical references, and fragments of everyday life. Her work reveals contemporary society as experienced through her own processes of perception.

For Rubin, it is the mind that views existence as fractured, resulting in compositions that speak of the intention to make sense of an often chaotic reality. Utilizing a visual language that depicts human interdependence with texture reminiscent of mosaic or tapestry, she defines a world where the individual human psyche is in constant motion with all others. She creates an environment where foreground and background are inseparable, containing social, political, economic, and emotional events. Figures and objects are woven into a tableau with moments of human life layered one over the other - constantly shifting and responding, and for better or worse, inextricably enmeshed.

Appraisal is a selection of works that urge the visitors to reflect upon the values assigned to various aspects of their own lives.  Broad political and social themes are represented along side depictions of intimacy and loss.  Rubin's unmistakable style literally weaves a thread throughout the exhibition connecting micro- and macrocosms  to form the fabric of our world.
