I hope you all had a great holiday weekend. I enjoyed my trip to the women's Final Four, and Now I am looking forward to some golf. The lessons at Alico are coming up on the 13th and you still have time to sign up. The Chapter Championship is looming, make sure you have signed up so we have a good representation of our chapter.  Remember we have a weekend and a weekday golf list that you can use to find playing partners this summer. Keep an eye out for social events, some neat things are planned.

Keep it in the short grass!

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!

Registration is now open for the 2015 SWFL Chapter Championship (1st qualifier) on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at The Quarry. The national EWGA Championship is the world's largest female amateur golf tournament.  Prizes for gross and net winners will be awarded for each flight and the overall Chapter Champion and Scramble team, all of which are then invited to move on to the Regionals (2nd qualifier)  in Hallandale Beach, FL at The Diplomat Golf, Tennis and Yacht Club on June 20, 2015.  If you qualify for the Regionals and can't play, don't worry as the next winner in line for your flight will be asked to play.  If you win at Regionals then you can move on to the National final at The Westin Mission Hills in Palm Springs, CA!

You will be playing with SWFL members in your flight based on handicaps for stroke play and scramble teams as follows:

Flight             Stroke Play                       Scramble Team

(total 4 players must be +2 to -5)

Champion    Handicap 12.0 and less                  +2

1st Flight     Handicap 12.1 - 19.0                      +1

2nd Flight     Handicap 19.1 - 25.0                       0

3rd Flight     Handicap 25.1 - 32.0                       -1

4th Flight     Handicap 32.1 - 40.4                       -2

Champion Flight will play from the STONE Tees - 5429 yardage 70.9/126, all other flights will play the GOLD Tees - 5091 yardage 69.1/121.

To participate you MUST have two 18 hole scores posted from Jan. 2015 through April 30, 2015 and you must have a verifiable handicap as of May 1, 2015 (when the new handicaps come out).  Your handicap cannot be higher than 40.4.  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

The deadline to register is 4/30/2015 and again THERE WILL NO EXCEPTIONS.  A change this year is that you will be registering directly to EWGA Headquarters (NOT thru 123 as for other events).  The total cost is $100, $50 charged by EWGA headquarters and $50 charged by SWFL Chapter - your SWFL board is subsidizing the cost to keep our fee down as much as possible.  This includes golf, lunch and prizes.

Registration procedure:

1. Go to  www.ewga.com and click on SIGN-IN or MEMBER LOGIN at the top of the homepage

2. Login to the Member Portal with your email address and password

3. Click on Event Registration in the left hand column

This is great opportunity to play a great course, play with and against members in your flight and hopefully have a great experience.  Let's make this a banner year for participation, so sign up early and be a part of it all!

Handicap Chat

What is my Handicap Index?

Your Index is calculated using only the 10 best of the 20 most recent scores posted and is expressed as a 2-digit number taken to one decimal place: for example, 26.5. You can interpret this number to mean that, when you are playing your best, you score about 26-27 strokes over par. "But why use only my 10 best out of my most recent 20?" you might ask. A Handicap Index is designed to be an indication of your playing potential rather than a reflection of how you play on average. This approach provides a built in incentive to improve. You might expect that you will always play to your handicap, but that is actually unlikely. You will generally only be able to score to your Index about 20% of the time, about 1 in 4-5 times. On average, your scores will be about three stokes higher than your Index.

MICHELE'S GOLF TIPSmichelesgolftips

Be careful if you use your left hand low.

Putting with your left hand low or cross-handed is an excellent way to putt.  Some of the best PGA Tour players use this style.  However, if you use the left-hand low method, your left or front shoulder will tend to dip lower than your right address.  This will deloft the putter and cause backswing problems, and will cause you to lift the putter up on the backswing and go off plane or come down and pop the ball at impact.  You should tilt your shoulders so that they are level and you will be able to take the putter back low to the ground.

Member Privacy vs Required Contact Information

  • More and more EWGA members are concerned about having their personal contact information appear online.  We respect that, and have a couple of options for them to have control of what they want to appear.
  • The option of marking their record in the EWGA database as "Do Not Publish Online" is available, however it has negative consequences.  If this is done to a member record, then the member is blocked from being able to login to the EWGA Member Clubhouse and the Handicap Service.  We do not recommend this option.
  • We have even had some members go online and delete their mailing address, phone and email so that it won't appear online.  We definitely do not recommend this option as then there is no way to communicate with them at all.  This impacts your Chapter too, as their contact information won't appear on the roster we send to you each week.
  • The best option is for members to login to the Member Clubhouse ( www.myewga.com) and update the "Privacy Settings" under the "My Profile" tab.  They can choose specifically which information they want to show online, and to whom (Including nobody).
