What happened to spring? It sure feels like summer to me.
Just a reminder the Chapter Championship is coming up and the time to sign up is almost over. Our sign up numbers are light, if you are not sure you want to play in it give me a call and let's talk. We have a rules seminar scheduled for  May 14th . Both beginner's and experienced can always learn something. This is evident by the pros always calling for a ruling to make sure they have it right. Hope to see you all there. The nine and unwind is gearing up to start in May, and It is always fun. For those who are permanent residents remember we have a weekend, weekday list of those wanting to play and looking for partners, and being retired I like to play as much as possible, so don't forget about me!

Keep it in the short grass!

GOLF RULES AND ETIQUETTE MEETING

CAF? ALFREDO'S

On May 14, 2015 there will be a Golf Rules and Etiquette Meeting at Caf? Alfredo's (in the Vanderbilt Shopping Center).  The night starts at 5:30 to socialize a bit, heavy appetizers will be provided, then the meeting to discuss golf rules and etiquette headed by the PGA Pro from Spring Run Golf Course, Patty Driapsa will be held.  Also on the panel will be Mo White and Michelle Klinowski (renowned SWFL members and players!).   They will discuss the rules of golf and answer any and all of your questions!

If you have signed up for the Chapter Championship (DEADLINE to sign up is 4/30, no exceptions!) then there is NO cost to you, it is included in your fee that you paid and is subsidized by the Board.  This is a mandatory meeting and you will receive a separate email regarding this after the 4/30 Chapter Championship deadline.  Do not sign up on 123!

If you are not signed up for the Chapter Championship, you are more than welcome to attend and gain a better understanding of the rules and etiquette, BUT you will need to sign up on 123 with a charge of $15.00.  Click on this link to sign up to attend this worthwhile meeting.

Signup on 123 will be available 4/20/2015 and more information will be available on 123.  Also, consider signing up for the Chapter Championship, this is a great opportunity to play golf at The Quarry Golf Lodge and be a part of our chapter's premiere event and play with other members in your flight.  See details on the Chapter Championship in the BLAST.

DEADLINE TO REGISTER is APRIL 30th

Registration is now open for the 2015 SWFL Chapter Championship (1st qualifier) on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at The Quarry. The national EWGA Championship is the world's largest female amateur golf tournament.  Prizes for gross and net winners will be awarded for each flight and the overall Chapter Champion and Scramble team, all of which are then invited to move on to the Regionals (2nd qualifier)  in Hallandale Beach, FL at The Diplomat Golf, Tennis and Yacht Club on June 20, 2015.  If you qualify for the Regionals and can't play, don't worry as the next winner in line for your flight will be asked to play.  If you win at Regionals then you can move on to the National final at The Westin Mission Hills in Palm Springs, CA!

You will be playing with SWFL members in your flight based on handicaps for stroke play and scramble teams as follows:

Flight             Stroke Play                       Scramble Team

(total 4 players must be +2 to -5)

Champion    Handicap 12.0 and less                  +2

1st Flight     Handicap 12.1 - 19.0                      +1

2nd Flight     Handicap 19.1 - 25.0                       0

3rd Flight     Handicap 25.1 - 32.0                       -1

4th Flight     Handicap 32.1 - 40.4                       -2

Champion Flight will play from the STONE Tees - 5429 yardage 70.9/126, all other flights will play the GOLD Tees - 5091 yardage 69.1/121.

To participate you MUST have two 18 hole scores posted from Jan. 2015 through April 30, 2015 and you must have a verifiable handicap as of May 1, 2015 (when the new handicaps come out).  Your handicap cannot be higher than 40.4.  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

The deadline to register is 4/30/2015 and again THERE WILL NO EXCEPTIONS.  A change this year is that you will be registering directly to EWGA Headquarters (NOT thru 123 as for other events).  The total cost is $100, $50 charged by EWGA headquarters and $50 charged by SWFL Chapter - your SWFL board is subsidizing the cost to keep our fee down as much as possible.  This includes golf, lunch and prizes.

Handicap Chat

What is my Handicap Index?

Your Index is calculated using only the 10 best of the 20 most recent scores posted and is expressed as a 2-digit number taken to one decimal place: for example, 26.5. You can interpret this number to mean that, when you are playing your best, you score about 26-27 strokes over par. "But why use only my 10 best out of my most recent 20?" you might ask. A Handicap Index is designed to be an indication of your playing potential rather than a reflection of how you play on average. This approach provides a built in incentive to improve. You might expect that you will always play to your handicap, but that is actually unlikely. You will generally only be able to score to your Index about 20% of the time, about 1 in 4-5 times. On average, your scores will be about three stokes higher than your Index.

Don't go left!

If you come to a hole where there is a lot of trouble down the left side, you can make sure your ball stays away from it.  Set up on the left side of the tee and aim toward the middle of the fairway.  Make sure that you make an aggressive swing with your shoulders to prevent your body from slowing down and your arms racing ahead.  Keep your center of the ball through impact while you turn through and your ball will fly straight down the middle.
