Dear ARI subscriber,
October was a busy time at ARI. We kicked off the month with research meetings in the Chicago area and wrapped it up with a think tank on aging and autism hosted by Autism Canada and the Pacific Autism Family Network in Vancouver, B.C. We also released our latest webcast series on co-occurring immunological issues and anxiety associated with autism spectrum disorders and published the latest information about our
2017 funded studies on the ARI website.
It is hard to believe that the holiday season is just around the corner. I know this can be both a joyful and a stressful time for people on the spectrum and their families. For some quick links and tips to cope, see

Study finds no evidence of reduced BMD associated with use of a gluten and casein elimination diet
New research published in the
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders identifies reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in 4-8 year old boys with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) compared with healthy age-matched controls, suggesting that nutrient intake and dietary status are not contributing factors to the observed decrease in Bone Mineral Density in boys with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Smartphone app identifies autism with high accuracy
Recently, researchers at the University of Rochester announced that they could diagnose autism spectrum disorders (ASD) with up to 93% accuracy using iPad games that measured children's movement patterns. Now a separate team of researchers at the University at Buffalo are reporting that they have developed a smartphone app that can diagnose ASD with equal accuracy.

Maternal hirsutism linked to higher odds of ASD in children
New evidence suggesting a link between autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and elevated prenatal exposure to male hormones comes from a study involving women with hirsutism.

Help Autistic Kids Foundation donates $40,000 to ARI
In order to provide parents and professionals with an independent, unbiased assessment of causal and treatment efficacy issues, ARI seeks no financial support from government agencies or drug manufacturers. Because of this, we rely on generous support from individuals, corporations, foundations and service organizations to fund research. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Help Autistic Kids Foundation for their recent gift which will provide funding toward two scientific research studies in 2018.

Aging and Autism Think Tank Held in Vancouver, B.C.
Autism Canada, The Pacific Autism Family Network and ARI facilitated a think tank on ASD in adulthood and later life last weekend in Vancouver, BC. ARI director Steve Edelson - shown here - helped kick things off Friday afternoon with a greeting for attendees. Meetings focused on collaboration around common priorities to advance research, knowledge and solutions for issues related to autism in middle adulthood and beyond.

Survey Takers Needed: Autism & Ehlers-Danlos/Joint Hypermobility Syndrome
Researchers at the University of South Carolina are interested in learning more about certain medical issues adults 25 years of age or older with a diagnosis of ASD and/or EDS/JHS. The online survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

Resiliency Program for Parents of Children with ASD
Massachusetts General Hospital's Parental Stress Study is offering a video-conferencing program to teach resiliency to parents who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The program will be 8 weeks long, and meet once a week for 1.5 hours. Please contact the Study investigators

Parent-Training Program Study
Dr. Lauren Moskowitz, a frequent ARI webinar presenter on challenging behaviors and anxiety, is seeking participants in a research study on the effectiveness of a group parent-training program for parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DD). Parents in the New York City or Long Island area are invited to participate.

Inflammatory Subtype: Biomarkers
Dr. Harumi Jyonouchi is conducting research to characterize a previously unidentified inflammatory subtype of autism to improve autism treatment options. Individuals aged 1-30 years with autism and also typically developing individuals are invited to participate

Treatment-Effectiveness Survey
Researchers at Arizona State University are conducting a survey to evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for autism, including medications, diets, therapies, and education. The investigators hope to learn which treatments are most effective for different symptoms (language, anxiety, sleep, GI, etc.). Survey results will be posted online for families and clinicians, and published in a scientific journal.
