The Advanced Placement Studio Art and International Baccalaureate Visual Arts Courses are options for Frederick County students to pursue extremely challenging course work that is eventually evaluated and moderated by qualified teachers and professional artists outside of the school system. These programs are recognized world-wide and the IB Diploma is recognized by colleges internationally. As an important step in the art making process, each student is asked to publicly exhibit his/her portfolio in order to better understand and appreciate the communicative value art can have upon the viewer. The student experiences the process of hanging an exhibit and receiving real-time feed back from an objective public.

The God of This World
A Staged Reading of a New Work by Playwright Don Thompson
March 23, 7:00pm
Free Admission
A Q&A session with Don Thompson will follow the reading
The God of this World is a generational comedy about the tense but often hilarious relationship between a stressed-out, divorced New York lawyer and his unemployed blogger daughter. The daughter, who blogs about extraterrestrials, is apparently having intimate relations with an alien. Her mother hears about the situation and becomes determined to stop any alien 'invasion' that might be in progress. Add to the mix the daughter's poly-amorous friend, a corrupt financier, a financial physicist, and a skittish and pregnant dog, and we end up with what author calls "a blending of The Importance of Being Earnest, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and Third Rock from the Sun." Fortunately, love wins out and all is well on Planet Earth.
Don Thompson is a playwright, award-winning filmmaker and producer. His plays have been staged coast-to-coast and been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, and covered on CNN and Good Morning America. His play Democracy: A Work in Progress was co-created with the MET in 2004, received rave reviews and was a Critic's Pick by City Paper and Best Bet with The Baltimore Sun. His films have won awards at Sundance, Cinema for Peace, New York Indie Film Fest and others, and been screened to audiences worldwide. His next film project is with indie director Hal Hartley and stars Parker Posey. "It's great to be working with the MET again," says Thompson. "Our collaborations are always fun, and yet we also try to provide a little food for thought."
Tickets or tables may be purchased online at marylandensemble.org, by phone at (301) 694-4744 or in person at the MET box office. All tickets are $40 at the door or two tickets can be purchased in advance for $70. Tables for four to eight people ($200-$400) are also available to be reserved in advance and include a sign with the party's name and a bottle of champagne on ice.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Maryland Ensemble Theatre who for over fifteen years have been producing thought-provoking theatre, fun family entertainment, artist residency programs for public schools, challenging classes and side-splitting comedy.
Follow the link above to find out much more information about the food, drink, and entertainment at the event!

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN March 28 - May 31, 2014
1920's Hollywood during the waning days of the silent screen era is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chipmunk-voiced silent picture stars. This fun musical theatre romp focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.
What has always been a signature of the various productions of Singin' in the Rain is the classic scene where Don Lockwood dances along the street as it rains on stage. After nearly 20 years since it last appeared in Frederick, Don Lockwood will once again dance in the rain with Way Off Broadway's spring production! Performances are every Friday and Saturday evening, with Sunday matinees on March 30, April 6, and May 4, 11, and 18. To purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.
CHILDREN'S THEATRE TILLY THE TRICKSTER Now - April 5, 2014
Molly Shannon has created numerous unforgettable characters on Saturday Night Live and in movies such as Superstar and Never Been Kissed and now introduces young readers to her latest hilarious creation, Tilly the Trickster. Tilly is a mischievous girl who loves nothing more than causing a little trouble. From leaking cups to toothpaste-flavored cookies, Tilly has a trick for everyone: her mom, dad, brother, classmates, and even her teacher. But when the tables are turned and her family does some scheming of its own, will Tilly decide to change her trickster ways?
Performances are every Saturday afternoon and the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. To purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.
