Maryland's nonprofit arts sector has a $1.07 billion impact on the state's economy and supports 12,700 full-time equivalent jobs-a 1,266 jobs increase over last year, according to a report released last week by the Maryland State Arts Council. The report details how spending by the MSAC's 241 grantee arts organizations and their audiences boosts Maryland's economy by creating and retaining jobs, and generating revenues for businesses and state and local governments.

Unveiling of Frederick's Fourth Mural
The Banner School
Stephen Parnes, The Banner School's head of school and the President of the Frederick Arts Council, has teamed with Anthony Owens, owner of Anthony Owens Remodeling and Repair, to create Believe, the City of Frederick's fourth major mural by artist Owens. In this case, Owens and Parnes conceived of the three-part mural together, with two of the elements created by Owens and one by Parnes, who had never before designed a mosaic artwork.
The official unveiling of Believe, which is open to the public, will take place on Friday, January 31, at 2:30 p.m. at The Banner School, whose historic campus is located at 1730 North Market Street. The unveiling will coincide with an art exhibit celebrating student art and Banner's commitment to the arts in the school's central building, Botkin Hall.

The Artists' Gallery 4 East Church Street Open Fri-Sun Noon-5pm Two Shows opening January 31 Opening Reception First Saturday - Saturday, February 1, 5:00-9:00pm New Member Show In February, The Artists' Gallery will feature a show by its five newest members. Painters Ray Burns, Joan Tarbell Plato, and Marion Griffin and photographers Charles Bowers and Mark Rothkopf will show work in the gallery's back room. Ray Burns: "My work involves developing a build-up of texture, color, and light to create a rich surface of the painting with the landscape as the framework" (at left, "Point of Rocks Train Station") Charles Bowers began by taking photographs to document the gardens he designed and built: "I discovered another way to express my art," he says, "first in the darkroom and now in the digital darkroom." Joan Plato will show paintings and a handmade book inspired by stones: "Stones are mesmerizing to me and appear again and again throughout my work." Mark Rothkopf will show a set of architectural pieces: "My work is often about light and shadows, and geometry- I'm drawn to those things." Marion Griffin's imagination was sparked by a trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon: "I am still intrigued by the thresholds, crevices and entrances into the cave dwellings." THE SOUND OF MUSIC January 17 - March 15, 2014 When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. Performances are every Friday and Saturday evening, with matinees on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of each month. To purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.

The Comedy Pigs, Maryland Ensemble Theatre's (MET) hilarious improv troupe are back in 2014 with a shiny new primetime sketch show! It's a brand new year with the same old problems: Find a job, pay your bills, make time to give a little back, and try not to do irreparable emotional damage to the ones you love - or would like to love. The Comedy Pigs feel your pain, and then twist it to their own fiendish but entirely entertainment-based purposes.
Just some of the eternal questions that the Comedy Pigs will tackle in their new sketch show include; What makes a good librarian? Does Superman have a green card? Is there disco after death? And they'll explore the ultimate cure for carpal tunnel syndrome.
The shows will be January 24, 25, 31 and February 1 at 8pm at Maryland Ensemble Theatre (31 W Patrick St.), located downtown in the historic FSK Hotel. Tickets are $12.00 (plus a $1.50 processing fee) and may be purchased online at marylandensemble.org, by phone at (301) 694-4744 or in person at the MET box office.

The Fredericktowne Players
presents
See How They Run
January 31, February 1, 7-9
The Fredericktowne Players is pleased to present the classic British comedy, See How They Run by Philip King. This play is set in the small English village of Merton cum Middlewick just after World War II. It is a humorous story about a young Vicar's wife, Penelope, who has not been able to adjust to this English town's idea of what a Vicar's wife should be. She is often reminded of her short comings by a church matron. Things begin to badly for her when the pompous church matron, Miss Skillon, comes to call unannounced, while she is surprised by a visit from an old male friend named Clive, who is in the USAF. Naturally, all of this happens while the Vicar, her husband is away for the evening. To confound matters, the wife's uncle, a Bishop, arrives for a visit a day early; as does the guest speaker, Arthur Humphrey. Add an escaped Russian convict who masquerades as the vicar and hides inside the Vicars home. Scandal, mistaken identities, a cover up, the mugging of the good vicar, a very drunk church matron and a very witty cockney maid all mystifies the police sergeant whose job it is to sort through all the lies, and cover up. All of these characters make for a comedy that is funny from the opening lines to the curtain call.
We look forward to you joining us this January 31, February 1, 7, 8, and 9, 2014 at the JBK Theater on the campus of Frederick Community College. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 8:00pm and Sunday matinee at 2:00pm.
See How They Run is presented through special arrangements with Samuel French. The Fredericktowne Players, inc. 2013-2014 Season is made possible in part by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council through the Frederick Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
