At 81%, Marylanders overwhelmingly agree that "a vibrant arts community makes Maryland a better place to live," according to a new statewide public opinion survey released by the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC).  According to the results, two out of three Marylanders say the state should encourage and promote artistic expression and access to the arts, with top priorities including art and creativity in communities, exposure to the arts in schools and opportunities for artists to be successful.

Winter Words: Poetry Writing Workshop

Saturday, February 22 | 10:00 am - 2:30 pm

Winter's open vistas and quiet landscapes offer writers time to reflect, compose and hear the songs in the trees.  Through poetry, students in this workshop will examine their connections to nature and a sense of place. If weather permits we will also venture outside to collect elements from the landscape-twigs, stones, leaves, images, daydreams, and memories-- to incorporate into our poems.

This workshop is for anyone wishing to explore language, imagination and poetry. We will work on three writing prompts in the morning and after lunch we will each share one poem aloud during a guided feedback workshop.  No previous poetry-writing experience is required; this class is open to all.  Susan Cohen will lead this workshop.

Cost $20, Coffee/Tea provided, bring your own lunch and notebook/pen

To register, or for more info, go to the Fox Haven Learning Center website.

New Member Show

In February, The Artists' Gallery will feature a show by its five newest members. Painters Ray Burns, Joan Tarbell Plato, and Marion Griffin and photographers Charles Bowers and Mark Rothkopf will show work in the gallery's back room.

Ray Burns: "My work involves developing a build-up of texture, color, and light to create a rich surface of the painting with the landscape as the framework" (at left, "Point of Rocks Train Station")

Charles Bowers began by taking photographs to document the gardens he designed and built: "I discovered another way to express my art," he says, "first in the darkroom and now in the digital darkroom."

Joan Plato will show paintings and a handmade book inspired by stones: "Stones are mesmerizing to me and appear again and again throughout my work."

Mark Rothkopf will show a set of architectural pieces: "My work is often about light and shadows, and geometry- I'm drawn to those things."

Marion Griffin's imagination was sparked by a trip to Sedona and the Grand Canyon: "I am still intrigued by the thresholds, crevices and entrances into the cave dwellings."

Member Show

The Artists' Gallery will also have a show of work by the seventeen other members of the gallery.

The Fredericktowne Players
presents

See How They Run
February 7-9

The Fredericktowne Players is pleased to present the classic British comedy, See How They Run by Philip King. This play is set in the small English village of Merton cum Middlewick just after World War II. It is a humorous story about a young Vicar's wife, Penelope, who has not been able to adjust to this English town's idea of what a Vicar's wife should be. She is often reminded of her short comings by a church matron. Things begin to badly for her when the pompous church matron, Miss Skillon, comes to call unannounced, while she is surprised by a visit from an old male friend named Clive, who is in the USAF. Naturally, all of this happens while the Vicar, her husband is away for the evening. To confound matters, the wife's uncle, a Bishop, arrives for a visit a day early; as does the guest speaker, Arthur Humphrey. Add an escaped Russian convict who masquerades as the vicar and hides inside the Vicars home. Scandal, mistaken identities, a cover up, the mugging of the good vicar, a very drunk church matron and a very witty cockney maid all mystifies the police sergeant whose job it is to sort through all the lies, and cover up. All of these characters make for a comedy that is funny from the opening lines to the curtain call.

We look forward to you joining us this February 7-9, 2014 at the JBK Theater on the campus of Frederick Community College. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 8:00pm and Sunday matinee at 2:00pm.

See How They Run is presented through special arrangements with Samuel French. A hilariously dark martial war of words between dysfunctional middle-aged couple, George and Martha, as they entertain a young professor and his wife. As the cocktails flow, the secrets spill and leave an indelible stain during an all-night battle of mind games and sexual intrigue. Albee's Tony Award winning masterpiece still packs a punch as it builds to its climatic revelatory conclusion that has shocked audiences for years. For mature audiences.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
 Now - March 15, 2014

When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre.
