  2014-15 Arts in Education Grants

A major component of the Frederick Arts Council is our Arts in Education (AiE) program, through which we give matching grants to schools and other educational entities to bring arts into the classroom and to our constituents.

The Frederick Arts Council's AiE funds help teachers and program specialists enhance their arts curricula and offerings by drawing upon the talents of artists and arts organizations in our community. Please check our Artist Directory for names and contact information or contact the Frederick Arts Council for recommendations and consultation.

Arts in Education grants are available to schools and other educational institutions in Frederick County to bring artists into their programs. Schools may submit up to two grants each academic year. The maximum amount of each grant is typically $300 and must be matched 1:1. Grants are accepted on a revolving basis until the annual budget is exhausted. It is strongly encouraged that grant applications be submitted at least 30 days prior to the planned arts activity.

MARYLAND ART MARKETPLACE OPENS FOR ARTISTS

In advance of launching its new Maryland Art Marketplace, the MSAC is inviting Maryland artists of all disciplines to sign-up for the Maryland Artist Registry, and encouraging those with online selling sites for their art, crafts or artistic merchandise to opt-in to the Maryland Art Marketplace during the process.

While the Marketplace will focus on directing buyers and gift-givers to Maryland artists' online selling sites, the focus of the Maryland Artist Registry will continue to be connecting Maryland artists - even those who don't sell online - with opportunities and exposure. Its recently launched redesign supports audio, jpeg and PDF files, as well as embedded video.

"Men with Pens": Bob Friedenberg & Bill Lewis

From December 7, 2014 until January 11, 2015 the Blanche Ames Gallery will feature the drawings of Bob Friedenberg and Bill Lewis. Their show, "Men with Pens" will delight and amaze those who view their works.

Bob Freidenberg started drawing in college while pursuing his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics. It's been his lifelong hobby and now a concentrated passion to record and manipulate his mind's wanderings.

Bob's work is a collection of very detailed black and white pen and ink drawings all made using a .25mm Rapidograph. Everything he does is inked entirely by hand, utilizing a wide variety of themes ranging from naturalistic scenery to devices and mechanical objects to science fiction and fantasy. Often, he incorporates pictures, words, symbols, equations, and anything else he can think of into his drawings to add depth, and texture, and to engage the viewer on a long term basis. In fact, recently he has started replicating the equations from his PhD dissertation as graphics. The idea is to keep you looking and always finding something new.

Bill Lewis grew up in California. His art training started in the 60's with an initial focus on abstract, modern painting and sculpture. His heart, however, has always been with realistic illustration and drawing. He worked as an artist and illustrator for a variety of venues in the 60's and 70's including being an animator for the Saturday morning cartoons (Batman, Superman and Archie, etc.).

Bill's artistic endeavors slowed for many years during a federal career in fire and emergency services training. After retirement, he resumed the work that he loves. Much of his current work has been in mixed media, including pen and ink, charcoal and pencil, ad marker, colored pencils, pastels and watercolor. His sight is drawn to people in everyday situations, with a special affection for the humorous conditions in which we often find ourselves.

100% of the profits of the sale of the photography will be donated to the Color on the Creek Project. Color on the Creek is an initiative where water plants were installed on Carroll Creek to reduce the amount of algae growing, therefore reducing the unpleasant smell and appearance of the creek. The current water garden dwarfs the display at Longwood Gardens south of Philadelphia and is 6 times larger than Monet's famed garden at Giverny France.
