 Maryland Artist/Teacher Institute

administered by Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS)

College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center - Adelphi, MD

July 7-11, 2014

Application Deadline April 11

Working in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS) administers the Maryland Artist/Teacher Institute (MATI).

Celebrating its 20th year in 2014, MATI is an intensive professional development summer program for elementary and middle school teachers and administrators that is conducted by master teachers, artists, and artist-educators in a residential university setting, with follow-up throughout the academic year.

Through lectures, seminars, and workshops, teachers are provided with opportunities to enhance their knowledge of the relationships among content areas and of ways that the arts can be used to integrate curriculum, content, processes, and skills. Cross-disciplinary teams examine various models for integrating the arts into the school curriculum. The teams participate in hands-on workshops to become more familiar with creative processes and to develop an understanding of the continuous interaction that occurs among the arts and other content areas. Participants begin the planning process for integrating the arts into instruction at their sites and sharing their work with colleagues.

Ann Schaefer - "Cityshapes"

April 5-27

Opening Reception, Saturday, April 5, 5-8pm

Open Saturdays 12-6pm, Sundays 1-5pm

Open Studio Demonstrations by Ann on April 11 & 25 11am-5pm

Gallery 322  presents "Cityshapes," recent urban and suburban plein air oil paintings by Ann Schaefer. These colorful paintings show how buildings define the landscape we live in, adding geometry to the greenery and gardens surrounding our homes and places we work, shop and play.

Ann Schaefer is a Fine Arts graduate of the George Washington University, and an award-winning painter of outdoor scenes. She enjoys painting on location by herself, or with other artists, and participates in many plein air painting events, finding moments of peace and quiet in every scene from tree-lined neighborhoods to a busy summer morning on the Ocean City boardwalk.  The excitement in these paintings comes from quick brushwork, bright color, and capturing sunlight as it hits a peaked roof, brick wall, or Victorian turret, creating surprising shapes and compositions.

"Say So" by Chris Noel
Chris Noel - "Time Travelers"

April 4-27

Opening Reception, Saturday, April 5, 5-9pm

This series of paintings celebrates human likenesses and the timeless expressions that can be found in simple abstract forms.

"We are hot-wired to recognize the human face wherever it may appear- in the clouds, in a stone veneer, or in a stain on the carpet," says Noel. "Sometimes these likenesses can appear strikingly realistic, but most often a little imagination is needed to make the leap."

Using broad strokes of acrylic paint, Noel brings to life moments of time that are universally recognized expressions of the human experience.  The images evolve as detail is added to reveal more clearly what, he says, "is already there."

These are the faces of Time Travelers- those who have been somewhere else... those who can cause us to pause for an introspective moment and recognize ourselves in someone else's emotion.

Noel's show, plus a show of work by all twenty-two members of the gallery, opens on Friday, April 4, with a reception from 5 to 9pm during First Saturday on April 5.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
 March 28 - May 31, 2014
1920's Hollywood during the waning days of the silent screen era is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chipmunk-voiced silent picture stars.  This fun musical theatre romp focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

What has always been a signature of the various productions of Singin' in the Rain is the classic scene where Don Lockwood dances along the street as it rains on stage.  After nearly 20 years since it last appeared in Frederick, Don Lockwood will once again dance in the rain with Way Off Broadway's spring production!

Performances are every Friday and Saturday evening, with Sunday matinees on March 30, April 6, and May 4, 11, and 18.

He'll want to know who when he gets back from a stint of torture and chip-shop bombing in Northern Ireland. He loves his cat more than life itself, and someone is going to pay. McDonagh's "blackest, funniest, most violent, most absurd play to date." (Financial Times)

The Musical Theater Factory at 24/7 Dance Studio proudly presents Little Women.   Joseph Mannarino directs the production, with music direction by David Loy and choreography by Gina Korrell.

Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, Little Women focuses on the four March sisters - aspiring writer Jo, who is at the center of the plot, her older sister Meg, considered the most beautiful of the four sisters, Jo's favorite sister Beth, a loving sister and gifted pianist, and Amy, the youngest, and the troublemaker in the group.  The story also follows their mother, lovingly nicknamed Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts while their father serves as an Army Chaplain for the Union in the Civil War.  Brilliantly intercut with the families lives appear glimpses of Jo's masterpiece, a melodrama gore and guts novel that evolves and matures alongside the character.

The score is most memorable for its rousing solo "Astonishing" and the group number "Five Forever."  Little Women is a newer musical, from 2004, with music by Jason Howland and lyrics adapted from the novel by Mindi Dickstein.  Allan Knee's script captures this family epic in a comprehensive night of theater, with charm, wit, and a reverence for the source material.

Join us for this wonderful weekend of music, theater, and children in the arts.
