April 2014
Governor Martin O'Malley's proposed 5% ($800,000) increase in General Fund appropriation for MSAC was approved by the General Assembly prior to its adjournment.
Through MSAC programs (Community Arts Development, Arts-in-Education, and Grants for Organizations), the funds will in turn be awarded to hundreds of Maryland organizations and arts programs that reach millions locally and target key statewide priorities that include economic development, education, community building and quality of life.
Vocalists are invited to enter the Star-Spangled Sing-Off. The winner will have the chance to perform the National Anthem in September when the nation celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner in Baltimore. The top prize also includes $1,814 and accommodations during the event. Entries are due by May 25.

Annie Chrietzberg uses textured slabs and thrown elements to make functional pots that could inspire normally upstanding citizens to play. She works with stoneware, and also dips into slipcasting, and fires it all to melty goodness in an oxidation atmosphere. Along with her studio practice, she teaches ongoing classes in the Dallas area and travels across borders to teach workshops. She is a regular contributor to Pottery Making Illustrated. Check out her work on the web, she's fantastic!
Space is limited so be sure to register early. For registration/information, call 301-662-3160 or email [email protected]

Ann Schaefer - "Cityshapes"
Now through April 27
Open Saturdays 12-6pm, Sundays 1-5pm
Open Studio Demonstration by Ann on April 25 11am-5pm
Gallery 322 presents "Cityshapes," recent urban and suburban plein air oil paintings by Ann Schaefer. These colorful paintings show how buildings define the landscape we live in, adding geometry to the greenery and gardens surrounding our homes and places we work, shop and play. Ann Schaefer is a Fine Arts graduate of the George Washington University, and an award-winning painter of outdoor scenes. She enjoys painting on location by herself, or with other artists, and participates in many plein air painting events, finding moments of peace and quiet in every scene from tree-lined neighborhoods to a busy summer morning on the Ocean City boardwalk. The excitement in these paintings comes from quick brushwork, bright color, and capturing sunlight as it hits a peaked roof, brick wall, or Victorian turret, creating surprising shapes and compositions.

The Artists' Gallery 4 East Church Street Open Fri-Sun Noon-5pm | "Say So" by Chris Noel | Chris Noel - "Time Travelers" Through April 27 This series of paintings celebrates human likenesses and the timeless expressions that can be found in simple abstract forms. Using broad strokes of acrylic paint, Noel brings to life moments of time that are universally recognized expressions of the human experience. The images evolve as detail is added to reveal more clearly what, he says, "is already there." Noel's show, plus a show of work by all twenty-two members of the gallery, continues through Sunday, April 27. L'Arabesque Baroque
Sunday, May 4 at 3pm
"A Continental Tour: European Chamber Music c. 1700"
Concert is free and open to the public
|
|
The ensemble L'Arabesque Baroque specializes in performing European chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries, communicating the period's joy, elegance, and excitement. The Washington Post has praised the group's "lightness and wit" and commented on soloists' "playful, imaginative personality and impressive mastery" as well as their "playing with exceptional eloquence and understanding."
Members of the ensemble include Barbara Spicher, baroque flute; Douglas Wolters, treble and bass viola da gambal William Simms, theorbo and baroque guitar; and Coriolana Simon, bass viola da gamba. The instrumentalists are joined by guest soprano, Polly Edmonds Baldridge.
The concert program features three songs by Henry Purcell, including "If Music be the Food of Love" and "What can we poor Females do," as well as songs by Handel and Monteverdi. The baroque flute takes center stage in a sonata by the Swedish composer Johan Helmich Roman. Two highly contrasting pieces by Antoine Forqueray showcase the richness of the viola da gamba, while the baroque guitar shines in a Spanish fandango. The four instrumentalists blend their sound in a 3-movement sonata by the French composer Boismortier.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN March 28 - May 31, 2014
1920's Hollywood during the waning days of the silent screen era is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chipmunk-voiced silent picture stars. This fun musical theatre romp focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.
What has always been a signature of the various productions of Singin' in the Rain is the classic scene where Don Lockwood dances along the street as it rains on stage. After nearly 20 years since it last appeared in Frederick, Don Lockwood will once again dance in the rain with Way Off Broadway's spring production!
Performances are every Friday and Saturday evening, with Sunday matinees on March 30, April 6, and May 4, 11, and 18.
To purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.
