Art in the Park 2014

Jersey Design Contest

Applications are due by Monday, June 8

The Frederick Arts Council (FAC) is sponsoring the 8th annual Art in the Park night at Harry Grove Stadium on Friday, August 29, 2014. This annual event is a unique fusion of sports and the arts. Creative activities are planned to promote and celebrate the visual and performing arts and the evening concludes with fireworks. The Frederick Keys team and Keyote will be wearing a one-of-a-kind jersey for the evening designed by a local artist. This event presents a unique partnership between the Frederick Arts Council and the Frederick Keys as they seek original jersey designs. This year is the 7th opportunity to have an artist-designed jersey. Previously selected designs include Bridget Von Briel's "Rubber Duck-Key" themed jersey, Bev Reidinger's "Star Spangled Banner" jersey, Ron Roos' "Fireworks" jersey, Samantha Baker's "Bumble Key" jersey, Jill Jacobs Carswell's "Summer Splash" jersey and Rebecca Cool's jersey, "Knock It Out of the Park."

Classes & Workshops

Annie Chrietzberg uses textured slabs and thrown elements to make functional pots that could inspire normally upstanding citizens to play.  She works with stoneware, and also dips into slipcasting, and fires it all to melty goodness in an oxidation atmosphere.  Along with her studio practice, she teaches ongoing classes in the Dallas area and travels across borders to teach workshops.  She is a regular contributor to Pottery Making Illustrated.  Check out her work on the web, she's fantastic!

Space is limited so be sure to register early. For registration/information, call 301-662-3160 or email ann.b.hobart@gmail.com

The Fun Company, Maryland Ensemble Theatre's (MET) family theatre, is now enrolling students for its burgeoning summer camp for kids and teens, Fun Camp.  Fun Camp's wildly popular and successful summer camps are an intense, yet fun filled experience for young performers.

Depending on the session, campers spend the first week exploring exercises in acting, improvisation, voice, movement, theatrical design, song and dance.  That is followed by a jam packed week of rehearsing for their final performance which is open to the public.  Final performances are structured to reflect the individual participants of each session and are created based on their creativity, imaginations and unique characters.

The Fun Camp is offering three different two week sessions that will run between June 23 - August 15, 2014.  All camps are held Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm with final performances taking place on the last Friday of the session at 3pm (except July 4 there will be no class and that final performance will be July 5).  The first session of the camp will run from June 23 through July 5, the second from July 7 to July 18 and the final session from August 4 through August 15.  All sessions are $380 with discounts available for additional family members or multiple camps.

For more information on each of the three sessions and to register, visit the Fun Camp registration page.

L'Arabesque Baroque

Sunday, May 4 at 3pm

"A Continental Tour: European Chamber Music c. 1700"

Concert is free and open to the public

The ensemble L'Arabesque Baroque specializes in performing European chamber music of the 17th and 18th centuries, communicating the period's joy, elegance, and excitement. The Washington Post has praised the group's "lightness and wit" and commented on soloists' "playful, imaginative personality and impressive mastery" as well as their "playing with exceptional eloquence and understanding."

Members of the ensemble include Barbara Spicher, baroque flute; Douglas Wolters, treble and bass viola da gambal William Simms, theorbo and baroque guitar; and Coriolana Simon, bass viola da gamba. The instrumentalists are joined by guest soprano, Polly Edmonds Baldridge.

The concert program features three songs by Henry Purcell, including "If Music be the Food of Love" and "What can we poor Females do," as well as songs by Handel and Monteverdi. The baroque flute takes center stage in a sonata by the Swedish composer Johan Helmich Roman. Two highly contrasting pieces by Antoine Forqueray showcase the richness of the viola da gamba, while the baroque guitar shines in a Spanish fandango. The four instrumentalists blend their sound in a 3-movement sonata by the French composer Boismortier.

The Frederick Chorale is performing Maryland Connections, a special concert of music by composers who have an association with the state of Maryland!  The concert features music of many different styles and genres, and truly offers something for everyone.

Because of the educational relevance of this concert, we are admitting Middle and High School music students free with a paying adult.

 May 3, 2014, at 8:00p.m. and May 4, 2014, at 3:00p.m.

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
 March 28 - May 31, 2014

1920's Hollywood during the waning days of the silent screen era is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chipmunk-voiced silent picture stars.  This fun musical theatre romp focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

What has always been a signature of the various productions of Singin' in the Rain is the classic scene where Don Lockwood dances along the street as it rains on stage.  After nearly 20 years since it last appeared in Frederick, Don Lockwood will once again dance in the rain with Way Off Broadway's spring production!

Performances are every Friday and Saturday evening, with Sunday matinees on March 30, April 6, and May 4, 11, and 18.

To purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (301) 662-6600.
