Events

with the Frederick Keys
Friday, August 29 - 7pm
Harry Grove Stadium
Tickets: $10

On August 29, 2014, the Frederick Arts Council (FAC) is sponsoring the 8th annual Art in the Park night at Harry Grove Stadium as our hometown Frederick Keys take on the Salem Red Sox at 7:00 p.m. Gates will open at 6:00 p.m.

The Keys will wear a jersey designed by a local artist that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Frederick Arts Council as it furthers its' mission. During the game fans can bid on their favorite player's jersey and after the game, winning bidders will go down to the field to receive the jerseys off the backs of the players.

The jerseys provide a unique canvas for an artist, bringing wearable art to the baseball diamond. This year, it will be a "Starry Night at the Ball Park" thanks to local artist Michelle Venable who provided the winning jersey design. Her design was selected by a panel from both the Keys and the Frederick Arts Council. Michelle, from New Market, is a member of the Frederick Arts Council and an art teacher in Frederick County who has taught for 20 years. She is also a master stencil artist, creating a series of lighthouse murals featuring lighthouses and maps of each Atlantic coast state, and has been producing murals as a professional artist for 30 years.

"Starry Night at the Ball Park" by Michelle Venable

Fans don't need to look just to the field to understand all that Frederick has to offer that is arts related. Harry Grove Stadium will be filled with Stitchers and various marketing booths including Frederick County's local arts organizations. Once again, the Frederick Keys will be joining to increase cultural awareness by painting baseballs that will be auctioned off via a silent auction that will take place during the game.

Aside from enjoying the game and various local booths, fans can participate in an art project of their own. Grab a sponge, dip it into paint and throw it towards an awaiting canvas, a project the Arts Council calls "Splat Ball". The Frederick Keys players will be making two "Splat Ball" art pieces as well and each player will sign the back of the canvas for the benefit of the Frederick Arts Council. The canvases will be available through a silent auction.

A section will be reserved for those that come for the annual Stitch and Pitch, a place for fans to embroider while taking in the ballgame.

Stay tuned to the FAC website for additional details as they become available!

It is summertime, and that means that the youth of Thurmont Thespians are working hard to bring to life one of the most beloved characters for generations, Anne Shirley in the classic story, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Laud Montgomery.   Anne of Green Gables is the story of a brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert (Daniel Flanick, Nate Kopit, Rachel Johnson, and Mallory Donaghue) who are getting on in years and look to adopt a young boy in hopes that he could help on their farm. Unknown to Matthew and Marilla, the orphan asylum made a mistake and sent them a girl instead. This girl happens to be a red headed, opinionated, very talkative, spunky girl named Anne Shirley (Annabelle Perry, Courtney Lake) who has the ability to imagine anything and everything. Marilla would say that Anne has a knack for making mistakes. But, she is pleased to tell Marilla, that she never makes the same mistake twice. As the story progresses, Anne is able to touch the heart of everyone in the town of Avonlea.

The Thurmont Thespians have assembled some of the most talented young people into two casts who sing and dance to tell this delightful story. The audience will be captured with the first song and held through to the curtain call. Even if you have never read the books, you won't want to miss this spectacular musical!

Inspired by Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley! It's 1955 and into a square little town in a square little state rides a guitar-playing roustabout who changes everything and everyone he meets in this hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy that'll have you jumpin' out of your blue suede shoes with such classics as "Love Me Tender", "Heartbreak Hotel", Jailhouse Rock", "Burning Love" and "Don't Be Cruel". Will true love prevail? Will the power of music win the day? Will this small town in the Midwest survive getting all shook up? These questions and more are answered as the characters come together for a finale that will leave you all shook up!

New Session added beginning July 21

The Fun Company, Maryland Ensemble Theatre's (MET) family theatre, is now enrolling students for its burgeoning summer camp for kids and teens, Fun Camp.  Fun Camp's wildly popular and successful summer camps are an intense, yet fun filled experience for young performers.

Depending on the session, campers spend the first week exploring exercises in acting, improvisation, voice, movement, theatrical design, song and dance.  That is followed by a jam packed week of rehearsing for their final performance which is open to the public.  Final performances are structured to reflect the individual participants of each session and are created based on their creativity, imaginations and unique characters.

A new Musical Theatre session has been added for ages 7-11 which will start on July 21 and run through August 1.

The final Fun Camp session will run from August 4 through August 15. Camp is held Monday through Friday from 10am to 3pm with final performances taking place on the last Friday of the session at 3pm. Cost is $380 with discounts available for additional family members and multiple camps.

For more information on the remaining sessions and to register, visit the Fun Camp registration page.
