  2014-15 Arts in Education Grants

A major component of the Frederick Arts Council is our Arts in Education (AiE) program, through which we give matching grants to schools and other educational entities to bring arts into the classroom and to our constituents.

The Frederick Arts Council's AiE funds help teachers and program specialists enhance their arts curricula and offerings by drawing upon the talents of artists and arts organizations in our community. Please check our Artist Directory for names and contact information or contact the Frederick Arts Council for recommendations and consultation.

Arts in Education grants are available to schools and other educational institutions in Frederick County to bring artists into their programs. Schools may submit up to two grants each academic year. The maximum amount of each grant is typically $300 and must be matched 1:1. Grants are accepted on a revolving basis until the annual budget is exhausted. It is strongly encouraged that grant applications be submitted at least 30 days prior to the planned arts activity.

MARYLAND ART MARKETPLACE OPENS FOR ARTISTS

In advance of launching its new Maryland Art Marketplace, the MSAC is inviting Maryland artists of all disciplines to sign-up for the Maryland Artist Registry, and encouraging those with online selling sites for their art, crafts or artistic merchandise to opt-in to the Maryland Art Marketplace during the process.

While the Marketplace will focus on directing buyers and gift-givers to Maryland artists' online selling sites, the focus of the Maryland Artist Registry will continue to be connecting Maryland artists - even those who don't sell online - with opportunities and exposure. Its recently launched redesign supports audio, jpeg and PDF files, as well as embedded video.

Fredericktowne Players and a Murder Mystery

For all of you who love murder mysteries and laughter, the Fredericktowne Players are able to combine the two. If you are having a birthday party, office party or any other social event, hiring the Fredericktowne Players will mean that your event will be a memorable one for your guests. Naturally, as we are entertainers, these murder mysteries are only for the purpose of enjoyment as we don't want to hurt anyone. However, there is a chance that any one of your guests might die of laughter or other complications.

Lord D. Nickens Mural Dedication

At long last, the Lord D. Nickens mosaic mural public art project was officially dedicated on Sunday, September 28. The event was attended by some 200 individuals, including civil rights activists, community leaders, and area residents. The Frederick Arts Council and the Housing Authority of the City of Frederick, which initiated the project, want to thank the Maryland State Arts Council for its generous $5,000 Public Art Project Grant, which significantly helped fund this important work.

ART IN TRANSIT

Purple Line Seeks Artists for Enhancement Projects

The Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) General Engineering Consultant Team (GEC) seeks artists to create enhancements for the future Purple Line light rail project. The Purple Line, expected to be operational in 2020, will connect Montgomery and Prince George's Counties in Maryland.

Artists are being asked to submit applications by Friday, November 14, 2014, to be considered for future opportunities along the Purple Line. This Call for Artists is open to all professional artists, preferably with public art experience.

Approximately 21 locations have been identified as Art-In-Transit opportunities, including fences, railings, ground planes, feature walls, retaining walls, bridges, tunnel portals, way-finding pylons, and station canopies and windscreens.

The second phase of artist selection is expected to begin in 2015, with a competitive interview or proposal process for each opportunity. Artists who are invited to submit proposals will be offered a stipend commensurate with the scope of the project and the proposal requirements.

Artists will be asked to work with the communities along the corridor to create artwork that highlights the cultural vitality of the region, and reflects the artistic, cultural and/or historical interests of the surrounding communities.

An English shoe salesman is forced to take the body of his recently murdered uncle on a vacation to Monte Carlo. Should he succeed in passing his uncle off as alive, Harry stands to inherit $6,000,000. If not, the money goes to a dog home in Brooklyn, or his uncle's gun-toting ex!

Clybourne Park

directed by Peter Wray

Final Weekend!

Thursdays through Sundays

Bruce Norris' witty new spin off of Lorraine Hansberry's Raisin in the Sun follows a Chicago household in 1959 as a black family plans to move into a predominately white neighborhood. The neighbors gather and try to convince the family to choose a different suburb. As the discussion heats up, the play switches to the same house in 2009 as the neighborhood has changed and gentrification has set in. This Pulitzer and Tony award winning satire takes jabs at everything from race to real estate. For mature audiences.

Harvest of Color

October 4-26

Opening Reception October 4 5-8pm

As the air gets a bit chillier, the artists of Gallery 322 turn to warmer palettes and dramatic color in a group show, "Harvest of Color," featuring landscapes, still lifes and figure works that glow with brightness and energy. The painters are Walter Bartman, Jackie Jouvenal, Jan Kaufman, Linda Kirvan, Ann Schaefer, and Russell Schofield.  Homer Yost's sculptures embody the warmth and drama of the season, and work with the paintings to make this an exciting and beautiful show. During most of the hours the gallery is open, at least one of the artists is scheduled to be in the gallery to answer questions, help visitors enjoy the exhibit, and occasionally demonstrate some of the techniques and materials used to create the artwork.
