President's Message
Our January monthly meeting was held in the Duck Club at Canal Park. Kimberly Beckett from the Downtown Akron Partnership and Christine Jonke from the City of Akron Engineering Bureau presented the downtown Akron redevelopment plan to make downtown more pedestrian-friendly, vibrant, and livable. Chris told us about the plans to implement the grant to reshape and improve the South Main Street corridor, and Kimberly spoke about the planning vision for the five focus areas in downtown. We had 32 in attendance that evening.
National Engineers Week will be recognized at our February meetings held at Skyland Pines in Canton on Wednesday, February 21, and at Emido's Party Center on Thursday, Februrary 22. In Canton we will hear from Pete Fierle speak about the Hall of Fame Village. In Akron, students from the University of Akron will showcase their latest efforts with the engineering design team competitions. Please join your fellow engineers to celebrate our week of recognition for all that engineers do to maintain our quality of life.
ASCE Student Chapter adviser Steve Duirk spoke to us about the decreasing university funding for their activities. These students have been showing their talents by winning numerous ASCE competitions nationally. We need to support these hardworking students, and our chapter is committed to supporting them the best we can. If there are any individuals or corporates that would also like to sponsor them in their efforts, I encourage you to do so very soon.
Best wishes to everyone.
