University of Akron Student Chapter News

The University of Akron ASCE Student Chapter is currently preparing for their steel bridge and concrete canoe competitions which take place in the Spring. Below is an update on their progress.
2017 Steel Bridge Fabrication

Steel Bridge
The steel bridge team had a busy fall. Recruiting went well, with approximately 10  new freshmen joining the team. Bridge design  was completed in October and AutoCAD drafting and early steel fabrication is currently in process. The team estimates Field Fit Day will be occurring mid-February 2018.

Concrete Canoe
Each year The University of Akron's Concrete Canoe Team designs, builds, showcases, and races a canoe made from lightweight concrete. Beginning in the summer, the student-led team begins the planning phase to build a lighter, stronger, and faster canoe than previous years. Students collaborate to design a hull, a mold, and a unique concrete mix that is less dense than water. The construction of the canoe takes place over the winter. Once cured, the canoe is removed from the mold, sanded, and finished for competition. In the spring, the team competes at the Ohio Valley Student Conference (OVSC) Regional competition in Athens, Ohio against teams from Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

The team is assessed on four components. The Design Paper is a technical report which details the planning, testing and analysis, and construction phases. A five minute Presentation is given for the judges to give an overview of the team's innovation, then the judges question the presenters. The Final Product is evaluated on aesthetics and workmanship of the canoe. The team then Races their canoe against other schools in five separate events. The team with the highest combined score advances to the 2018 ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) at San Diego State University competing   against some of the best engineering universities from around the world. Good luck students!
