Student Chapter News

The University of Akron Civil Engineering students recently competed in the National competitions for both Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge.

The Concrete Canoe team traveled to San Diego State University and placed 8th overall in the nation! High honors included 2nd in Display, 4th in Men's Sprint, 5th in Men's Endurance, 10th in Female Sprint, 10th in Co-Ed Sprint, and 12th in Female Endurance. Way to go students!


The Steel Bridge team  traveled to The University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and placed 21st overall. They finished 13th in Lightness, 15th in Construction Efficiency, 15th in Stiffness, 27th in Construction Speed, and 28th in Construction Economy. Congratulations students!

Construction Update
 
OCIT 3 Drop Shaft 
Water Reclamation Facility Stepfeed Phase 2

The contractor has completed the outer wall of the OCIT 3 drop shaft. No further work is planned for this 166-foot deep, 45-foot diameter drop shaft until Rosie, the tunnel boring machine, ends her journey by cutting through the drop shaft and is lifted up and out of the shaft.

The WRF Stepfeed Phase 2 project includes refurbishing and updating the aeration basins and final settling tanks to increase the volume of water that can be treated at the Water Reclamation Facility.

Update on Rosie's Progress
Rosie, the tunnel boring machine for the  Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel (OCIT) project, has advanc ed more than 4,000', which is  approximately 64% of her total journey that began on October 18, 2017.

Construction Site Trolley Tours
The Akron Waterways Renewed! program is offering two-hour trolley tours of the completed and active sewer construction projects around the City of Akron in 2018. Attendees will learn about the ongoing Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel (OCIT) work by visiting a variety of basins and green infrastructure sites, as well as learn about the history of the canal.

Green Infrastructure Free Event

A free educational networking event about how to create healthy urban trees that can be used to efficiently and cost-effectively manage stormwater will be held on  Wednesday, August 8th from 4:30-6:30 . Hosted by GreenBlue Urban at the  Market Garden Brewery, 1947 W 25th St, Cleveland, OH 44113.
