President's Message

Every February, in honor of our nation's first engineer, we celebrate  National Engineers Week with George Washington's birthday to bring the public's attention to the contributions that all engineers make and have made to improve our quality of life. ASCE members and students, as well as all engineers, came t ogether at two local events to commemorate the engineering profession. As part of the celebration, the Canton Engineers Week banquet was held February 21st at Skyland Pines in Canton to recognize scholarship winners and present awards. After the steak dinner Pete Fierle, Chief of Staff at the Hall of Fame Village, showed a movie and talked to the audience about the importance of the huddle, and discussed some of the facilities that have been built and others that are planned to be built as part of the Hall of Fame Village. The next evening at the Akron Engineers Week banquet at Emidio's in Cuyahoga Falls, the attendees dined buffet style and students made presentations about their achievements, which were really impressive. These engineering students are honing their skills at recognizing everyday problems that, for example, people with limited mobility face, and solving those problems using tools and their minds. We can be really proud of the history of our profession, and can be confident that the upcoming generation of young engineers will take charge of promoting civil engineering in the future.

The March meeting will be held at Goodyear Hall, originally built in 1920 to hold an audience of 1,600, located on East Market Street across from the  former Goodyear headquarters. The meeting will include a presentation on the renovation of this beautiful theater.

Thank you for your overwhelming financial support of this ASCE section. The ASCE Akron-Canton Section Board of Direction meets regularly to discuss issues and make sure we all get the best bang for every dollar of our membership dues.  Please come join us at our monthly section meetings, held the third Thursday from September until April, to meet, eat, learn and earn a half-hour credit. And please don't forget to support the civil engineering students at the University of Akron.

Best wishes to everyone.
