Dr. Agbuya receiving the DSA

The Distinguished Service Award -recognizes someone (living) who has served or is serving the church. It may be presented by the church or a group within the church (not individuals).

The Memorial Roll - is a record of people who have been memorialized by gifts to Missionary Health Care. It is kept online and is a significant way to honor the deceased (membership in a local church is no required) and may be presented by groups or by individuals.

Both of these honors are accompanied by attractive certificates stating the recipient and-in the case of a DSA-the reason for presentation.

Three Characteristics of a Leader's Heart

Leadership is an attitude. Sure, some people have the skills that contribute to success in leadership. But I'm convinced that most leaders, especially the great ones, are those who rise to meet the crisis or opportunity of their generation-not those who master a set of techniques.

The best leaders don't so much aspire to lead as they are driven to solve problems, create change, and bring progress. So while skill is undoubtedly important for leadership, the leader's heart is vital.

Here are three signs that you have the inner qualities that make for a great leader.

1. You Value Results over Rules - Of course a leader must maintain solid ethical, moral, and spiritual boundaries. They do not believe that the end justifies the means. But the best leaders are not slaves to traditions or standard operating procedures. They want to see the right outcome for their efforts.

If you're a die-hard rule abider, you may struggle in leadership. If improving the product, increasing sales, winning more converts, or graduating more students is more important to you than "the way we do things around here," you have the heart of a leader.

2. You Care about Others More Than Self

The greatest leaders are not in it for themselves. Trace the history of great leadership from Gideon to David, from Washington to Lincoln. Each of them would just as well have stayed home-except that others needed their help.

Shallow leaders take on a responsibility to enlarge their own platform, make more money, or hear the applause of the crowd. Great leaders realize that their work is a sacrifice of self. They are driven by a sense of justice and a desire to make life better for others.

If you're hoping to achieve a great reputation as a leader, you probably won't. If you care more helping others than getting them to like you, you have the heart of a leader.

3. You Value Long-Term Improvement over Short-Term Gains

All great leaders take the long view. While they have a sense of urgency, they realize that lasting change is not achieved in an instant. They're willing to be patient. Think of the young Moses, who resorted to violence to achieve justice, versus the older Moses, who led the p eople on a decades- long trek toward freedom.

If you lack the patience to work for weeks, years, even decades toward a goal, you may not be cut out for leadership. If you are willing to work toward results that you may never see, you have the heart of a leader.

Kudjip, Papua New Guinea

Moving from bed to bed, Chaplain Moses Munda was making his rounds in the Pediatric Ward at Nazarene Hospital, in the Highland of Papua New Guinea.  This is one of the ministries he especially enjoys, interacting with the children, and praying with the parents for healing of their precious little ones.

Maggie, the mother of a very sick four-month-old baby boy explained how she had been a patient there five years earlier and how that after Chaplain Moses had prayed for her and the ongoing illness, she had been healed and no longer needed the medications she had been taking for some time.  She further explained that since that time, to show her gratitude, she had been spending each Friday and Saturday fasting and praying for the work of the Nazarene Hospital at Kudjip, the chaplains, the doctors and the staff.  And now, she was bringing her sick son to be treated.

Amidst the countries that are leading the world in technological growth, there are still areas that have very limited access to "gadgets."  It is in these areas that the Church of the Nazarene is introducing the Solar Powered Papyrus Audio Bibles, bringing God's Word to people groups that might not otherwise hear.

Audio Bibles are being distributed to small groups in some local churches. The small group leaders are playing the Audio Bible during their group sessions. They also lend the Papyrus to those who are sick and who cannot come to church or attend the small group. Many people are gaining a fascination in listening to the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God who allows media to bring the message to those who have not yet heard, and for whom the written word is inaccessible.

Member Care

After our basic needs are met, research suggests, more money doesn't bring us more happiness. Perhaps that's why, in general, people who prioritize material things over other values are much less happy, and comparing ourselves with people who have more is a particular source of unhappiness.

In this post, there are several suggested activities for cultivating happiness that are all science-based and affirm what Christ has been saying all along.  From things like building relationships to practicing kindness, you will find an explanation of how this can help boost your happiness.
