Anderson University Parent Connection

We're Half-Way Through!

This semester just seems to be flying by . . . for you, too?  The Valley is filled with beautiful orange and yellow leaves and the air is crisp and cool again.  But, more than that, our students are at the semester half-way point.  They're in the midst of papers and projects, and they've finished with their mid-term tests.  Sometimes, as the days become shorter and they feel like their "to do" lists grow longer, our children might become discouraged or overwhelmed.  It's our job as parents to build them up and encourage them.  Send them sweet text messages or emails, or drop a note in the mail every once in a while to let them know you're always thinking about them.  Keep reminding them that they're more than half-way through the semester . . . and soon they'll have another one behind them, with more credit hours added to their transcripts.

I hope you enjoy learning more about some of the wonderful things happening on our campus.  Please let me know if you have any ideas or would like to see something in particular featured in the Parent Connection.  Just a few more weeks and our kids will be home for Thanksgiving!  I'm wishing God's abundant gifts for every AU family during their time of Thanksgiving!

Blessings to all parents who love their children.

Water Dance: AU Dance Majors Perform Helios Suite

When Arlon Bayliss designed and created the Helios fountain on Anderson University's campus, he never imagined it as the perfect setting for a modern dance performance. But the AU professor of art was pleasantly surprised after Thursday, September 27th's afternoon presentation of the "Helios Suite" by AU dance majors.

"It was wonderful," Bayliss said excitedly after the noon show that featured a dance in and around the fountain. "What a treat to have a dance piece choreographed around my work. It was like the dance and the fountain became one."

A group of 18 dance majors carried out Assistant Professor of Dance Shauna Steele's vision of the suite at the Helios plaza on the north side of Hartung Hall. Steele said this show was their gift to the community which has been so supportive of AU's dance program over the years...

Sociology Class Immersed in Chicago Community
During Annual Trip

Chicago Skyline

Every semester Anderson University students in the Social Problems class take a weekend trip to Chicago to partner with the Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture. Through this trip, students have an opportunity to supplement their education in societal problems. They see a different view of the Windy City, returning with a better understanding of the social issues taught in the classroom.

Lolly Bargerstock-Oyler, AU assistant professor of social work, leads the trip every year. "Rather than staying inside the classroom and talking about issues of racial division or economic upheaval and poverty, students go out into the city and speak to people who have the first voice on that topic," said Bargerstock-Oyler.Throughout the course of the weekend, the material the students have learned in the classroom changes into a genuine and legitimate grasp on these hardships and life issues.

The goal of the trip, in Bargerstock-Oyler's words, is to "come from a perspective that we want to learn and understand, and understanding is essential to moving forward."  This trip gives AU students opportunities to expand their academic education and grow. Some students even return to stay an entire semester with the Chicago Center. The current Social Problems class just returned from Chicago with a new outlook on urban social issue.
