"Ending the Silence" Update

NAMI Sussex currently has nine volunteer presenters for its Ending the Silence (ETS) program, which will be made available to middle and high school students, as well as County College students, in the fall. Coordinators Ria Smith and Jeri Doherty are following up with the volunteers to make sure they have completed all the required steps before they begin their online portion of the ETS program training. Two “live” training sessions have been scheduled for Wednesday, August 8 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm and Saturday, September 8 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Family Partners Community Center, 67 Spring Street in Newton. Presenters can opt for either live training.

Additional volunteers are still welcome to apply. Young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 who are living happy, fulfilling lives while managing a mental health condition are especially needed. Other volunteers can be either family members or individuals over 35 living with a mental health condition. Anyone interested in becoming an ETS presenter should call Jeri at 973-214-0632 or email nami.sussex@gmail.com. To learn more about Ending the Silence, go to www.nami.org/ets .
Fall Family-to-Family Course Starts Wed., Sept. 12 in Sparta

The Fall 2018 NAMI Sussex Family-to-Family course will be held on Wednesdays, 7:00-9:30 p.m., at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Sparta, beginning Sept. 12 and ending Dec. 5.  This free evidence-based course can be a great help to anyone who has an older teen or adult loved one with mental illness.

Course participants learn effective communication skills, problem-solving techniques, and how to manage their own stress in the caregiving role.  They learn the scientific facts about brain-based mental health conditions.  They find relief in knowing that they are not alone.  The teachers (family caregivers themselves) can connect class members with local treatment resources for the ill loved one, as well as ongoing family support services.
Registration for the course is now open—call Michelle at  973-417-1783  or email  nami.sussex@gmail.com .  Class size is limited to 20.

CIT Law Enforcement/Mental Health Training Coming to
Sussex County This Fall!

The Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office recently announced that a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for police and other law enforcement personnel is being planned for October 2018. A CIT Steering Committee has been formed, and the first steering meeting was held on Tuesday, July 24. Assistant Prosecutor Maggie Czykier will be guiding the steering committee, assisted by NJ State Crisis Intervention Director Ed Dobleman. For more information about CIT in New Jersey, visit www.CIT-NJ.org .

NAMI Sussex has been advocating for CIT since 2010. Thanks to the leadership of County Prosecutor Francis Koch and Assistant Prosecutor Maggie Czykier, CIT is finally just a few months away! NAMI Sussex members Jeri Doherty, Bob Cubby and Ria Smith have been serving on a county Law Enforcement/Mental Health task force that has met quarterly over the past year and a half and will continue their involvement by serving on the CIT Steering Committee.
