A pioneer of his time,
 Michael Eckert was instrumental in running
The Weather Channel as CEO from 1985-1999. Currently, Michael sits as a board member of the Angel Capital Association, and is the chairman of the NO/LA Angel Network in New Orleans-a group of accredited investors from Louisiana who look to grow and develop early stage companies.
 
Join Michael on Thurs., Sept. 29, as he shares the process behind conceiving and launching The Weather Channel. He will also provide tips on how to best access Angel Capital, and discuss the pain points that many parks face on a daily basis regarding their assistance in helping companies attract investments and funding.  

New McMaster Research Centre at MIP Receives $12 Million Federal Grant

On Tuesday, July 26th, Federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development,  Navdeep Bains, announced that a federal grant of almost $12 million will assist McMaster University in opening the new research centre, Biomedical Engineering and Advance Manufacturing - BEAM. It will occupy the 40,000 sq.ft. warehouse attached to the MARC facility at MIP and is expected to open at the end of 2017.

Early-stage international startups are being invited to enter a competition to win a potential investment of €50,000.

Enterprise Ireland's newly launched Competitive Start Fund (CSF) aims to support entrepreneurs currently based overseas but who are willing to relocate to Ireland to grow their business idea.  Read more.
Istuary Innovation Group and Accelerator Centre Announce Collaboration

Istuary Innovation Group and the Accelerator Centre announced the signing of a Collaboration Agreement. Startups and small to medium sized technology companies within the Toronto-Waterloo Region will have greater access to global markets as a result of the new collaboration agreement.  Read more.

The Elora Research Farm, operated by the University of Guelph, is now home to a new soil monitoring laboratory, the first of its kind in North America. This laboratory is designed to better mimic field conditions, yet contain highly sophisticated monitoring equipment. There are 18 soil columns, half of the columns containing Elora Silt Loam and the other half containing Fox Sand, transported intact from a research farm near Cambridge. Each soil column is one meter wide by 1.5 meters deep and contains multiple sensors (for sampling soil water, nutrients and greenhouse gases at various depths). Of the 18 soil columns, groups of 6 are connected to 3 underground monitoring stations, which contain analytical equipment and data loggers.  Read more.
Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation ("HKSTP") proudly announced that the Hong Kong Science Park Phase 3ab ("Phase 3ab") project has been granted the Grand Award in the Hong Kong Non-Residential (New Building) category at the Quality Building Award ("QBA") 2016.  The Grand Award is the highest recognition for projects nominated in each of the six award categories. The construction of nanowires could prove remarkably different in future after researchers in Ireland found a simpler process to produce germanium-tin variants, with smartphone manufacturing one area which may benefit from the discovery.

Nanowires feature in a growing number of modern devices, with everything from wearables to smartphones all relying on what are, essentially, minute versions of regular wires.  Read more.
FoodWaikato's multi-million dollar spray dryer has been running at full capacity since its upgrade a year ago. The spray dryer is used to make high value powder for dairy companies for use in diverse value added products.
 
It is also being used to powder non-dairy products such as avocados. 
 
The dryer at the Waikato Innovation Park, Hamilton, was partially funded with a $3m equity injection from Callaghan Innovation allowing FoodWaikato to help companies take innovations to the export market.  Read more.

Jorgenson Consulting has been retained to conduct a national search for an executive to lead the economic development and tourism efforts that create jobs and investment prosperity throughout Stafford County. Reporting to the County Administrator, the Director is responsible for planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Economic Development and Tourism Department.
