This Week: Picture Perfect

At this time of the season, it's all about the icing on the cake. We have snow, and the resorts are making it picture perfect for you to come out and play. You read that right: we have snow. Pay no attention to the bare ground in your backyard. It's mid-winter in the mountains.

Weather Report

"Snow at higher elevations..." Hey, we have higher elevations! That's the good news, but the forecast models for today and Friday are making our head spin. The best weather report may be to just stick your head out the window. We'll most likely see a mixed bag, but Saturday's forecast is for snow, snow, snow. Get ready for a powder day!

Best of all, this means that Sunday will truly have something for everyone. On the Alpine slopes, the groomers will lay down perfect corduroy on some trails and leave others for nice bumps. You'll no doubt find a few powder stashes here and there! On the Nordic trails, you can expect fresh classic tracks all around and fun fluff in the backcountry. Not a bad time to get out snowshoeing, ice climbing, snowmobiling or just take a romp in the woods with Fido! Better yet, do it all in one weekend!

Weather, snowmaking and grooming updates can always be found on the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce Facebook page
Sled Dogs to Tackle Mt. Washington

Dogsled TeamAn intrepid team of sled dogs and mushers from the Muddy Paw Sled Dog Kennel of Jefferson, NH will attempt to summit Mt. Washington via the Mt. Washington Auto Road on either March 7, 8 or 9, depending on weather conditions. This will be only the fourth ever attempt of such a feat and the first time ever in winter. The Muddy Paw mushers and dogs will be following in the historic "pawprints" of Arthur Walden and his famed Chinook team, who were first to summit in 1926, followed by the first and only woman, Florence Clark, in April 1932 and then Carl Brown in April 1992.

This event has been undertaken in an effort to not just make history, but raise awareness and funds to help support the more than 130 sled dogs that the Muddy Paws kennel have rescued and cared for.

In addition to the one team making a summit attempt, a truly unprecedented opportunity will be offered on two additional sleds--two guest seats will be auctioned to the highest bidder for this once in a lifetime opportunity to ascend halfway up Mt. Washington and experience the world above treeline on a dog sled. Local school children will also be involved, as they write letters to the Mt. Washington Observatory staff members on the summit (which will be delivered by the sled dog team) and follow the track of the mushers to the summit.

Bill Koch League Festival Brings Families to the Snow

The 2012 TD Bank Bill Koch League Festival, presented by the "The Valley Originals" restaurants, will take place March 3rd and 4th at Great Glen Trails.

Great Glen Trails Kids

The event will feature the opening ceremonies and parade; relay races based on grade levels; a non-competitive ski tour including themed elements and characters; a fairy house trail; on snow obstacle course and other usual Great Glen Trails activities, including snow tubing. The event is open to kids from as young as 4 years old right through 8th graders.

This year's theme will be "Blast from the Past to the Future on Skis" and will offer the hundreds of participating kids and their families a chance to create outfits themed from past, present or future and see how the sport has evolved from its early days. The event is being co-hosted by Great Glen Trails and the New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA).
