Friday Wisdom

A yoga teacher recently shared this story (supposedly an old Chinese tale) with our class. I thought it was good enough to pass on.

A farmer and his son had a beloved stallion who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbors exclaimed, "Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!" The farmer replied, "Maybe so, maybe not. We'll see."

A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild mares back to the farm as well. The neighbors shouted out, "Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!" The farmer replied, "Maybe so, maybe not. We'll see."

Later that week, the farmer's son was trying to break one of the mares and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The villagers cried, "Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!" The farmer replied, "Maybe so, maybe not. We'll see."

A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all the able-bodied boys for the army. They did not take the farmer's son, still recovering from his injury. Friends shouted, "Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!" To which the farmer replied, "Maybe so, maybe not. We'll see."

There are probably many different interpretations of the moral of the story. To me, the enduring lesson is that we do not always know in a difficult moment what may turn out later to be a blessing in disguise.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Early Bird Deadline is past and look who has the larger share of the Musketeer March sponsorship pie:

Musketeer March update
Yes -- Cherry is really bringing in the sponsorships. The lead classes are: Mme Brown ($702); Mr. Carrer ($631); and Mme Marchand ($590). At Oak the lead classes are: Mme Paturot ($370), Mme Hanriot ($300) and Mr. Tsafack ($275).

Musketeer Hat
At stake is the Musketeer Hat. The winning campus gets to keep the hat for the next school year. Word has it that Mme. Royce wants to keep that hat -- but Mme Houfaidi wants it too! Who will win?

The next deadline is Monday, May 1. Bring in a total of $100 in sponsorships (the total is the combination of the sponsorships already brought in and the new amount) and win a Casual Day Sticker! Remember -- you can ask friends and family to give using PayPal too. Click here for PayPal.

Thank you! Proceeds from the Musketeer March go to support the Annual Fund.

Those of you who have not completed your online re-enrollment form, please do so as soon as possible. If your child wants to attend summer school, the packet must be submitted by Sunday, April 30th, at midnight.

Saying "Yes" is only the first step, you must hit the "Re-enroll" button that appears for the form to open.

If you think you have completed your forms and did not receive an email from SchoolMint titled "Re-enrollment Completed", then your process is not complete. Please logon and see if it still says "In Progress".

Anything not completed will be highlighted in orange when you hit "Submit". The form is not submitted until you see a green bar saying "Thank you for completing your enrollment" and get a confirmation email.

Questions about re-enrollment? Please contact Peggy Arians, parians@academielafayette.org.

Attention Incoming 8th Grade Familiesshotscook

Dear parents/guardians,

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services revised the Code of State Regulations, Immunization Requirements for School Children, 19 CSR 20-28.010. These rules establish the minimum requirements for children enrolled in Missouri public, private, and parochial schools. These revisions include a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine and a  Meningococcal vaccine required for all incoming 8 th grade students. In many cases, children will have received these vaccinations around age 11 or 12. Please contact your child's physician to see if they have had these vaccinations and to obtain a new vaccination record for school use.

Your child's proof of immunization should be uploaded into the SchoolMint system at the time of re-enrollment. If you are unable to upload those documents, please be aware that i t is your responsibility to give a copy of the updated shot records to the school nurse.
These immunizations are required to be on file with in the nurse's office prior to students beginning their 8th grade year or attending summer school.

Spirit Wear Newsspiritwear

  • We continue to liquidate many of our spirit wear items at clearance prices to prepare for new designs for next year. I have random items including a few tumblers and sport sacks which could make good gifts for travelers. Email me, Becky Smith (smith.rebeccabogen@gmail.com) to see if I can fit your needs with what I have in boxes at home first, if not you can order from the warehouse via our website ALSPIRIT.com
  • It's time to start designing next year's CROWDSOURCED AL TEE SHIRT! An official submission form will come out next week but you can already start to sketch out your ideas. Tee shirt designs MUST:
    1. Go on either a red or white tee shirt so that they fit within PE uniform guidelines
    2. Include the AL logo somewhere on the shirt
    3. Not be France specific - in other words, they shouldn't include French flag, or Eiffel tower unless they are including other French-speaking country icons.
    4. Be cost effective so they are accessible to the school community. Please attempt to minimize cost drivers including multiple colors and print locations.
Submitted designs will be reviewed to make sure the follow the criteria above and then a survey will be posted to select the winning design.

Oak Journée Culturellejourneeculturelle

Dear Oak parents,

Thanks to the great response we received last year from the pilot program of Journée  Culturelle, we are doing it again! The theme for this year's program is "Le sport et les traditions dans le monde", or " Sports and Cultural Traditions Around the World".

Unlike the Winter concert, which is mandatory for students and teachers, the Spring Journée  Culturelle is voluntary. Teachers are volunteering extra time to help students learn songs and dance from around the world. However, not all teachers are able to do this because of other classroom commitments.

In addition, even if your student's class is participating, not all students will be in the performance. We understand that spring is a very busy time for some students (and their parents) with sports and other activities, so performing opportunities were offered on a volunteer-basis.

However, even if they are not in the production, all students will participate as audience members during the daytime performance in May.

There will be a repeat performance that evening, for parents. Please plan to join us!

One other thing -- please do not come to the daytime performance because of space constraints.

Thank you for your strong support of our school.

painless fundraising

The Painless Fundraising Committee will be collecting labels at the end of April so please send in all Box Tops, Best Choice (including Clearly Organic) and Tyson A+ labels to your teachers. Please be sure to label your baggie with your teacher's name so that your class gets credit.

If you have a lot of labels, it would speed up counting  if you could separate them into different baggies by label type. The class with the most labels will win an ice cream social at the end of the school year! This is an ongoing program so please continue collecting throughout the year.

If you are interested in helping us count on Sunday, May 7th, or have questions about the painless fundraising program, please contact Lynne Yarnevich at lynneporthouse@hotmail.com.

AL in the community

On  March 25th , Jory Veenstra, and his dad Peter Veenstra, participated in the "Have a Skate with Bob" fundraiser hockey game to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. He was also awarded the Most Valuable Player Award for several reasons: he was the youngest player in the game, he scored 2 of the 6 goals for his team, and he raised $3,400.00 through his website (no other individual has raised more than $1000 in the history of this event). In recognition of his fundraising efforts, he did the ceremonial puck drop at the Missouri Mavericks vs. Wichita Thunder hockey game that evening (the Mavs won).
