Recently, an NSHE task force began examining the current state of dual enrollment within the system and worked to expand opportunities for our local students through more affordable tuition costs for families. We are excited to announce that high school students participating in the ASC Dual Enrollment program will now only pay a discounted tuition rate of $150 per credit hour. These new fees have reduced the costs for students by nearly 50%! With the new fee structure now in place for Fall 2022, we strongly encourage high school students to consider getting an early start on their college degree at UNLV. Not only will students have a dedicated ASC academic advisor to ensure proper course planning, but students will also have full access to UNLV campus resources, as well as the learning and academic support resources provided by the Academic Success Center. UNLV faculty and staff can also utilize the employee Grant-In-Aid benefits for their children’s courses!
Through the program, students are eligible to enroll in Fall, Spring, or Summer and take any course if they meet the prerequisites, which are usually 100- and 200-level courses. We offer placement testing for students interested in courses that may require a specific prerequisite. To help ensure they are on the right track, we work with each student to recommend courses that will provide them with future credit flexibility to fit with different types of majors and align with their career goals. The program also offers the opportunity for dual credit upon approval of their high school counselor. This allows the students to complete one class but receive credit at two different places! While the credits earned are transferable, we are proud to report that over the past decade, nearly 44% of students who attended the ASC Dual Enrollment Program moved on to enroll as full-time undergraduate students at UNLV following high school graduation.
To help in the student’s transition to college, our program provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with the campus community and develop an understanding of the expectations of a successful college student. The growing research on dual enrollment indicates that students who participate in dual enrollment courses are more likely to “finish high school, matriculate in a postsecondary institution and experience greater postsecondary success” (Zinth & Barnett, 2018). The students who have participated in our program have proven to be successful academically by achieving an average GPA of 3.43 in their dual enrollment courses. News organizations have even featured some of our students, highlighting their academic accomplishments.
The new guidelines have also opened opportunities for the development of concurrent enrollment programs, which are college courses taking place on the high school campus, taught by an approved high school teacher. The new policies created a structure for the high schools to work with a faculty liaison, provided qualifying teachers, and developed processes for administering classes at the high school campus. Some of these beneficial partnerships, which offer courses for as low as $75, have already been developed at Clark County HS, Las Vegas Academy, Silverado HS, SLAM Academy, and more. The UNLV Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education office has created a dedicated Dual Enrollment website for more information on these partnerships and other on-campus partnerships through the College of Education and College of Business. With the expansion of access for both dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment, there are many new exciting opportunities for our local high school students to grow academically and prepare for a successful transition into college.

Elizabeth Johnson, Senior Academic Advisor, took part in a recent article published in Animals as part of a Special Issue - Animals’ Tenth Anniversary. This paper presented the results of a collaboration between over 100 researchers, practitioners, and end users of animal-based support worldwide. The UNLV Baseball Team earned the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Excellence Award for the 4th straight year. This award is given to any high school or collegiate team with a maximum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for the 21-22 academic year. The Hustlin' Rebels were one of three teams from the Mountain West to receive the award.

The UNLV Women's Tennis Squad received the ITA All-Academic Team honor with eight individuals named 2022 Scholar-Athletes, a program record! This award is open to collegiate teams posting a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA for the 2021-2022 academic year. Individual Scholar-Athlete awards are given to students with a 3.50 or higher.
New Initiatives

Math Bridge is launching its first 0-credit course (MATH 5X) this Fall 2022 to assist Exploring and Major Pathways students needing math support. The MATH 005X 0-credit course is dedicated to helping students refresh and practice their math knowledge to prepare them for enrollment in a Spring 2023 math class. Students undergo 16 weeks of developing confidence in math skills by progressing through customized learning modules and receiving tutoring from skilled facilitators. The course simulates components of a math class to create a space for students to learn and thrive among peers. Students should speak with their Academic Advisors to get registered.

ASC Tutoring has partnered with the School of Nursing to offer Nursing tutoring. Tutoring is available virtually by appointment made through Campus Connect. Courses available for tutoring are Nursing 305, 306, 307, 313R, 320, 325, and 350. For more information, visit ASC tutoring.

ASC Tutoring has also partnered with the Department of Communications to create a communications lab to support students from any discipline with one-on-one consultations to help develop oral presentation skills. Communication Coaches are graduate students who have taught COM 101: Oral Communications or are undergraduate student tutors in the COM Labs. What led you to work at UNLV as an Academic Advisor?
I realized that out of all my previous jobs, I loved it most when I was able to work with people one on one. Given my previous experience working with students as an instructor and writing tutor, it seemed like the perfect fit.

You work with a lot of exploring majors students. How do you help
them navigate their journey at UNLV?
With exploring majors, ASC advisors talk a lot about how personal interests and aptitudes might relate to a major or career, but we also help students with a lot of practical stuff too. We’re often their first point of contact at UNLV; we schedule their first classes, give an advising presentation during orientation, and continue to help them on their journey towards declaring a major.
What is your favorite part about your job as an Academic Advisor?
I like helping students discover the path that best suits them and seeing their confidence grow as they develop both academically and personally.
What is your favorite piece of advice for UNLV exploring major students?
You don’t have to rush to pick a major during your first semester. It’s something that requires careful consideration, so give it the time it needs, even if that means waiting until the second semester or beyond.
What can people do to make your job easier?
I do a lot of prep work in advance of my appointments, and I’ve found it’s smoother and more productive overall when the student preps on their end as well, whether that’s having specific questions for me already in mind or just being in the right head space to talk about their concerns.
What is something we may be surprised to learn about you?
I was focused on becoming a writer for the better part of the last decade, which meant taking many part-time jobs to have the time to write. I realized that I could never be the type of writer who could steadily produce publishable work year after year, and then when I got married, I had to balance my priorities. However, despite realizing my limitations and fully embracing the life changes that my marriage and new career have brought, I still try to scrape a few hours together to write each week. Whether or not I finish my book and get it published remains to be seen, but I can’t seem to quit trying.
What trait do you most like about yourself? What would you change?
I like that I’m able to stay pretty even keel—I don’t easily get angered or excited when interacting with people, which has helped me plenty of times in stressful situations both at work and in life. However, it also means that I am often not as assertive as I need to be, which often annoys my wife. She jokes that I married her because I need someone to complain for me when my order’s wrong.

What is your year and major?
I am starting my second bachelor's degree! I recently graduated with my bachelor's in Business Management. My family has been a part of the restaurant business for over 20 years. I have two older brothers who graduated. We plan on opening our own restaurant in the next 3-5 years. They're just waiting for me so I can put in my part, and we'll go from there.

Why did you choose to come to UNLV?
I am from Los Angles, CA, so UNLV is close to home. Being so close gives my family a chance to come to my games. They’ve come to every home game the past six years. UNLV is also a great place to learn and have fun! The people you meet and the opportunities here are endless.
Describe what it's like working with your SAAS Academic Eligibility Specialist.
Working with David Wedley has been nothing but incredible. It doesn’t matter who you are on the team. He will treat you the same as everyone else. Not only is he a great SAAS Specialist, but he’s also someone you can talk to and have a great conversation about life in general. He is why I get to be successful on the field and in the classroom. Having someone like him by your side is the support every college athlete/student needs.
What does a typical day look like for you as a student and a student-athlete?
I feel like being a specialist kicker, our schedule is the same as everyone else, but at the same time, it's a little bit different. Everybody else has to watch the film on their plays and practice for 2-3 hours straight. As for me, I'm just a kicker, so I can only watch so much of my film. The coach gives me 3 to 5 kicks per practice, but that's the same as a game. My reps are minimal, but they have to be perfect. Sometimes I only get one chance in the game, and I have to be 100%. I do have more free time while the team is in their meetings. We have the student-athlete playroom. We're just sitting there playing ping pong, pool, PlayStation, etc. After that, we have special team meetings for around 20 minutes, and then we have another hour just waiting for the guys to finish their meetings.
What is one piece of advice you would give to new UNLV student-athletes?
When times get hard, you can not quit. I’ve thought about leaving the sport at one point, but luckily I have such a supportive family who told me never to give up, and now I’ve had the best seasons UNLV has ever seen. I tell myself I don’t have to play football; I GET to play football. So as long as I have, I will make the most of it. Another piece of advice is that many people get recruited to play at Division 1 or 2. They're always told, "oh, you know, come here, you'll play." Then sometimes, you show up, and things don't go according to plan. I know the coaches don't give you the opportunity they said they would give you, maybe because you're a freshman. Even if you're a sophomore, junior, or senior, I heard this quote "when in life, when you don't get a chance, you gotta go and take one."
Who is a person in your life that has been highly influential? Why?
This is a difficult question because I have two people in mind. My mom and my dad. Even when they had nothing, they still gave me everything. My parents have worked extremely hard their entire lives, and it’s finally paying off for them. And because they believe in me so much, I never want to disappoint them; no matter what I do in life, all I can think about is making them proud.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of football?
I love painting. When COVID happened, I felt very lost without football. I couldn’t go out or do anything fun, so I realized it was time to find out if I had any other interests, and I did! I live in LA and always go to Griffith Observatory and other museums. For some reason, every time I'm in there, it just makes me very happy. I love seeing the artwork and just admiring it. Ever since I started painting, I realized how long a certain piece could take and just being able to understand and accept the fact that you can do a piece that may take up to a month. It was very cool, and I'm like, "you know what, I'm just going to give it a try." Then the first time I did it, it wasn't amazing. I just kept practicing at it, and now I've sold over fifty things. I’ve been painting for almost three years, and I can proudly say I’m pretty good at it. If you want to check out my artwork, you can go to Instagram and type in @myuglyhappiness.
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Every football college athlete has a dream to play in the NFL, and that’s exactly what I want to do. Growing up, I played soccer, but I also realized I had a talent for this sport. Whether it works out or not, I also plan to open a restaurant with my family. My mom's family owns restaurants all across Long Beach, California. I wish to do the same as them and become successful at it.
