Academic WorldQuest National Competition

The Carlos and Malu Alvarez 2017 Academic WorldQuest National Competition will be held on Saturday, April 29, at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.
 
United States Institute of Peace:

This year's National Competition will feature a welcome reception at the  United States Institute of Peace , on  Friday, April 28, from 4:30-6:00 PM. Students will have a  unique opportunity to engage with Institute staff and learn more about USIP's important work around the world.

USIP Reception Welcoming Remarks: 

WACA is pleased to announce that Ambassador William Taylor, Executive Vice President of USIP, will make welcoming remarks entitled  " Peacebuilding in Practice" , at the AWQ 2017 Reception at the United States Institute of Peace .

William B. Taylor, is the Executive Vice President of USIP. He was the special coordinator for Middle East Transitions in the U.S. State Department, and oversaw assistance and support to Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Syria. Ambassador Taylor served as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine from 2006 to 2009. He also served as the U.S. government's representative to the Mideast Quartet, which facilitated the Israeli disengagement from Gaza and parts of the West Bank. He served in Baghdad as the first director of the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office from 2004 to 2005, and in Kabul as coordinator of international and U.S. assistance to Afghanistan from 2002 to 2003. Ambassador Taylor was also coordinator of U.S. assistance to the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. He earlier served on the staff of Senator Bill Bradley. He is a graduate of West Point and Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and served as an infantry platoon leader and combat company commander in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Germany.

Reception Wait-list

WACA will make every effort to give priority to students and their primary chaperones for attendance to the reception in order to enhance the student experience for the competition weekend. All wait-list candidates will be notified by no later than April 21 if the guests on the wait-list from your team will be able to attend the reception.

The High School Summer Abroad Programs are very popular and admission is on a rolling basis. We therefore strongly encourage all students participating in the AWQ Competition to check out and apply to CIEE's High School Summer Abroad Programs because spots are filling fast!
