LCU Fall Assembly
In November 100s of Lake County United Leaders gathered to meet with Sheriff Curran, Mayor Cunningham of Waukegan, County Board Members, and Superindent Plascencia of Waukegan School District to press forward on:
  • Increasing training for police to deescalate in a crisis and divert from jail
  • Support affordable housing
  • Improve and expand college and career counseling in Waukegan
Divert from Jail and into Treatment
After the Fall Assembly LCU was invited by the Sheriff's office to present our mental health strategy to a group of 35 Waukegan Police Officers participating in a 40 hour Critical Intervention Team (CIT) training pilot program.
This is a critical step toward implementing CIT to 100s of law enforcement officers across Lake County, which will lead to diverting those in a mental crisis from jail and into appropriate treatment.

Lake County Sheriff, NICASA and the Waukegan Police Department moved quickly on an opportunity to implement this pilot program that could be used as a model across the Illinois and the United States
Progress on Affordable Housing
Warren Township voted to approve the proposed sale agreement for affordable housing.
This was an important step toward increasing affordable housing in Lake County.
LCU is partnering with Lake County Residential Development Corp (LCRDC) on this proposal.
LCU has identified additional land and will continue to work toward building support for these efforts.
