How shoulder flexibility can
dictate your back pain

Whether you play volleyball, tennis, or have changed a light bulb before, odds are you have experienced low back pain at some point in your life. Low back pain can be a scary thing, especially when it pops out of nowhere like a villain in a haunted house. You don't know where it came from and you're afraid that it won't go away.
The biomechanics of the human body dictate that the last few degrees of shoulder flexion (overhead reach) arise from extension of the thoracic spine (mid-back). If that extension range is not present or if the shoulder is not flexible enough to fully reach overhead many people compensate by arching their lower back.
The problem is amplified in young gymnasts. A study of high level gymnasts showed that 90 percent of the athletes, reported having moderate to severe back pain 10 years after retirement. This is not surprising with the incredible amount of...

Alex Otto
University of Alabama at Birmingham

As a freshman soccer player at University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alex Otto has dealt with a myriad of injuries throughout her career but attributes strength training and physical therapy as the key to prevention. She is currently battling shin splints and chronic low back pain. The injuries slow her down in practice and training but with physical therapy at Achieve Orthopedic Rehab Institute and rehab at school, she manages to continue training at a high level of intensity.
Chronic injuries, like Alex's low back pain, are hard to avoid in collegiate athletics. The high intensity practices mixed with the increased frequency of training can often lead to overuse injuries. Alex has been able to find a combination of treatment and training to allow her to continuously perform at her highest capacity.
This is important since Alex has had enough adversity to overcome while playing soccer. She has always had to prove herself to every coach, from club to college. In high school, she made JV her junior year but knew she could do better. She went to extra practices and did strength training on her own (even giving up her spring break) in order to improve and show the coaches she deserved to be a Varsity player. It paid off when in the same year, her team made it to the state finals and she scored in the super sectional game.
Her improved performance also paid off when it came time to choose a college. After ruling out Boston University and Colorado State, Alex considered University of Chicago.
