Veil of secrecy lifted in decade-long oil leak

Apalachicola Riverkeeper and partners recently announced a Clean Water Act legal victory that will make it possible for the public to obtain information about an on-going oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil wells have been leaking since 2004. P rior to the legal settlement reached this week,  Taylor Energy broadly objected releasing information to the public about the leaky oil wells and what was being done to contain it. We will continue to monitor the situation with our partners and work to protect Apalachicola River & Bay.  Click here to read more on this.

Apalachicola Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire noted that this information could provide important insight into the risks of offshore oil drilling: "The inability to stop the over a decade-long leak demonstrates the significant risks being taken by those in the oil drilling industry without clearly stating those risks to the public. The lack of assurances required by those permitting and overseeing drilling operations needs a serious review to ensure the public interest is protected at the oil industry's expense, not at the cost of lost public resource value."

Apalachicola Riverkeeper is celebrating 15 years of stewardship of the Apalachicola River & Bay! Can you help make our annual RiverTrek campaign the best ever? On Oct 6, sixteen paddlers will launch their kayaks into the river just below Woodruff Dam.  They will paddle 5 days to reach Apalachicola Bay.  A team of cyclists will shadow them, riding paved and dirt trails through the river basin. It's right around the corner!  Mark your calendars.  Oktoberfest is returning to Apalachicola. Partial proceeds from this weekend long event benefit Apalachicola Riverkeeper. Events run Oct 9-11.  This is same Saturday that Rivertrek paddlers arrive into Apalachicola Bay.  Another great way to meet other supporters.
